Mtn Shifting: 9 Spd Shifters 8 Spd Cassette?

Helping a buddy slam together a MTB. He can shred better than I can, but he's low on funds. I have Sram X7 9 speed shifters/derailluer, and an 8 spd cassette and chain on hand. I think I have a 9 spd chain if need be, but I was hoping to save that for my build. Will this work together? Search brings up conflicting opinions.

It's been a while since I've tried something like this, but i remember the cassette and shifter should match.

The mixing is more a thing when you have road shifters and want a mountain cassette with mountain derailleur. 10 speed SRAM worked well with this.

That's an interesting chart. From the numbers, it looks like a SRAM 11 MTB RD would work well with Campagnolo 8 speed shifters.

I don't think the 8 speed cassette is going to work. I think the cheapest options would be a SunRace 11-32 9 speed cassette for $20.49 shipped, and a new FSA chain for $8.47. You could probably find some used 8 speed SRAM grip shifters for even less cash.
