sherwood gibson at ventana is a CNC savant. ventana makes the squids. go direct to the master and rattle can your own.

plus, you can now get a ventana "electric sex weld" sticker

He doesn't seem to list AL as an option in the "Pricing" section, but I bet Carl Strong would build you one if you asked.

My understanding -- and I fully confess, I'm not sure how I came to this understanding; maybe from his website? -- is that Carl used to do some aluminum, but ~8 -10 years ago he stopped offering it because he didn't enjoy working in the material.

And since then I think he's moved his shop twice, so I'd be surprised if he were even still tooled up to work aluminum these days.

I used to get alu frames from Carl back in the 2000s. You are correct that he stopped offering alu frames some time ago. My last two Strong frames were outsourced by Carl to a contract builder whose name escapes me.

I didn't know Carl outsourced any of his frames. Were these aluminum?

Don't forget O.G. Chris Herting of 3D Racing. He was part of the original Yeti crew and helped develop Easton AL tubing in the 90s.

The last one or two I had him build were. He was definitely building them himself when I got my first few from him and his turnaround was less than two weeks in some cases.

Are these listed frame builders buying pretty much standard Al tube sets from someone else.....then building frames? Or are some doing some hydroforming on some tubes for their custom builds? Like Cannondale, and other hi volume producers are getting done in Taiwan? I would think the building of hi performance Al bike frames has progressed beyond just welding (or however you join them) up a frame from standard tube sets. My CAAD 10 is not even latest tech, and it's way beyond just a set of tubes joined together.

Russ Denny

His website isn't up anymore. His LinkedIn profile implies that he's shifted to being a project manager for a construction/fabrication company. Although it also lists "framebuilder" as "-to current", so maybe he's still building if you can reach out to him.

The Principia that was awesome is gone. There is a related company with that name now.

Correct. FTW is listed directly and indirectly 3 times in the first 7 (FTW, Spooky, and he's built a lot of VYNL's frames)

Yes, the original Principia is long gone, as far as I know, as GonaSovereign wrote.

Those original alu Principias were super frames, very modern in their time. I had one, it was very well made, and definitely at the opposite end of the color spectrum, being very spare minimal early "stealth", from the also-great original but very colorful Kleins.

Racer Rosa in the UK. Also i think they outsource production to Cicli Vetta in Italy. So add Vetta into the list as well.

I snagged that Mulholland in the classifieds, will be my second FTW bike (I also had a custom-painted VYNL a couple years ago and foolishly sold it to buy a team bike).

By any chance, do you recall how the VYNL rode? VYNL was on my list as well before my Spooky so i'm curious how you'll get on with the Spooky.

VYNL mentions 6059 series alum whereas Spooky was a bit hush hush on their choice of alum other than using different lines of Deda alum (this was early 2017 for me).

The geometry was fantastic, and the ride was pretty darn good as far as aluminum frames go. The VYNL frame fit 28s (same as the Spooky), so I'm sure that played a large part. They seem like very similar bikes, which is a big part in why I pulled the trigger on the Mulholland.
