Harlequin bar wrap

Retirement has me attempting tasks I'd never have considered when I was working. This week's challenge is wrapping my bars in a diamond (ie Harlequin) pattern. I'm getting the pattern down okay and even maintained the pattern around the levers, but where I'm have trouble is getting sufficient tension on the wrap. The tape I'm using has beveled edges. I can;t seem to get them to lie flat. I'm curious if there are bar tapes that lack beveled edges or if the collective has any other hints that will make this little project successful.

I think Harlequin wrap is usually done with cloth, isn't it? So no beveled edges there.
