Picked up the new bike (Spearfish salsa) from the shop Wednesday
And just got out for a maiden voyage. With snow still
On the trail, the single track isn’t safe for at least for me to ride
Another cyclist had turned back due the deeper snow
At higher elevations. At the snowmobile crossroad
I heard a bizarre engine revving sound and altered course.
I found a guy from Kansas with his Newfie stuck up to his axle
In snow on a very steep part of the trail well out of cell
Service and unable to dial 911...After digging him out
By hand and lining the entry tracks with birch branches, rocks, leaves
Dirt and pine needles, I tromped down each of the tracks.
I then grabbed hold of the roof rack
Stood on the back bumper and rode him safely out...
Perhaps at least this guy will drive friendly when
Encountering other cyclists in the future...

Good work.

I suppose if you have drivers with questionable judgement and skills, vehicles like that give them just enough confidence to do stupid things and not enough capability to get out of it.

good story.

I helped rescue a motorist a while back on one of the gravel roads near here. He somehow made it over the mountain on the ice covered road, but slid into the ditch when he was almost to the bottom. The front of his ancient Toyota pickup was in the ditch in the middle of a switchback. There was a guy there that tried to pull him out with his BMW suv, I thought I was going to watch thousands of dollars of damage happen, but I didn't want to piss anyone off by telling them they were doing something foolhardy. Fortunately, the rope broke first. When that failed, I convinced them we didn't really have to get him out of the ditch, just pointed downhill. It was so easy he probably could have done it himself.

Maybe the picture isn’t showing it all, but a 4Runner can’t get out of that on his own?

Thanks for helping a fellow human.

Oh, and nice new bike! I hope you enjoy it.

I probably should have gone back to where he was stuck
But wasn’t really thinking of a post with the excitement
Of having sent him on his way...
