View Full Version : Anyone running Dura Ace 9100 rear derailleur with 11-34 cassette?

I've got the R8000GS on one bike with a 11-34 cassette converted to 12-34 with 12T from 6800 cassette and 44-33 up front, so a total of 33T wrap. On another bike, I run it with the Roadlink DM on an 11-40 with a 42-28 up front, for a total of 43T wrap. Both shifted with RS685 STI shifters. This rear derailleur is rated for a 34T largest cog and 39T total wrap. Both bikes shift great.
As I shift the Firefly from Record 11 to Shimano I'm wondering how a 9100SS rear derailleur would work with the 12-34 cassette (which is currently being shifted with Record 11) and a 46-34 up front, total 34T wrap. It's rated for 30T max and 35T wrap, so wrap isn't a problem. I've gone for Dura Ace 9100 shifters and 9000 brakes, so would be kinda cool for DA derailleur also, if it wasn't a compromise in shifting. I've never run Dura Ace on anything before, always Ultegra.
There's a Gravel Cyclist video where he shifts a 11-36 SRAM cassette with a 9150 RD, and a thread with less clarity on Velocipede, but I wondered if anyone here has actual experience on the road.

I've used a 9100 with a 50-34 and 32 tooth cog and it was ok. I think I got it to shift ok with a 34 but big-big really was stretching the system, so for a trip to Europe I put on a 8000 medium cage RD. When I got back, and no longer needed the 34 I switched back to the 9100 derailleur but I also needed to shorten the chain a bit as it was really slack in some of the small ring mid - small cogs. If you never ever inadvertently cross chain I think you could could get away with it, but for peace of mind I'm sticking with the 8000 RD if I have . a trip or ride that need the larger range.

Thanks for your experience. I don't think cross-chaining will be an issue for me, with 34T total wrap - that's within the 35T spec on the 9100. It's really about whether the B screw has to be so far in that the shifting in the small cogs gets less precise. That's what I found on my Litespeed with the 11-40 cassette and the R8000GS - it worked but not awesome in the small cogs, so I put the Roadlink DM in and all got better.
