I like to train outside (non-cycling content) during the summer months but that means I need good protection for my face, ears, and neck.

Wide brim - Check

Since we'll be in the hot sun on hot and hot and humid days I need a hat that's light and vented to breathe.

Light weight and vented - check

I also need to be able to sometimes snap the brim on the side up and out of the way so I don't constantly knock the hat off my head.

Snap up brim - check

Can anyone recommend some quality hat mfr's or suppliers that make hats that fit the bill. Last year I tried a North Face hat that mostly checked the boxes but one week in the logo was already bubbling up and flaking off and the build quality wasn't that great.

Something along these lines...

I have a Tilley and an old Panama Jack that has surprising held up for years. Both were good when I was scouting in irrigated cotton and I could soak the hat in water at every field. Otherwise the Tilley especially is way too hot, shade is good and sun protection is good but it's like having a heater on your head.

Straw is where it's at for cool and ventilated but with a loose weave that loses a few points on sun protection. Problem is I've never seen one with snap up sides, best compromise I can think of would be one with a retention cord that can be tightened over the top to hold the brim up.

I need that hat too and when I find it I'll buy an extra.

The Tilley I have looks about the same but is synthetic as opposed to the classic Cotton...

The synthetics are much cooler. Still it is a tradeoff of heat vs sun protection.

I really don't enjoy having Sunscreen all over my face on a hot day where I'm walking around all day. Particularly for something like hiking around with a camera the sunscreen creates a lot of problems the Tilley solves completely. Wearing sunglasses while using a camera is annoying too due to the sunglasses messing with the viewfinder.. especially if you have a polarizing filter. Also sunscreen ends up all over the camera & my eyeglasses, etc.. if I'm taking photos.

There are times where it's really hot and humid though where it feels like you have to get into the shade and take the hat off though for sure.

My Tilley also doesn't have the snap up sides as it's considered an "ultra light hat" or something, but that's a tradeoff I was fine with.

There are a million variations of hats from all these brands. But for example I had a Stetson or something that looked like a Tilley.. it was falling apart in a year. Tilley hats last forever from what I've seen. My father & FIL both have Tilleys they bought for boating or golf that are > 20 years old.

I've got an early version of the KÜhlwear hat from when they were Alfwear--has what you are looking for -- except the snap up brim.

Not as cool as a straw hat, but I have taken it on bike trips for coverage, used it for yard work and stuff, and it is light and pretty cool.

Mine has held up well, except the stitching system for the chin cord. It looks as if they have improved that with a grommet as well as extending the back brim a little from mine for neck coverage. $45.00:

Add some snaps to the brim? Would probably have to reinforce it...

That KÜhlwear looks like it could work except no snap up brim which is a non-starter for training purposes. Otherwise I would wear that.

Tilley has some possibilities.

Also any company like Tilley that makes hats in actual sizes will ruin you forever for all the cheap hats that are "one size fits no one".

I never seem to find winter hats that are anything but "one size fits no one".

The current one I have is OK and but is on it's last legs.

Makes a great fly fishing hat.

I went with khaki for the lighter color. Seems cooler with the lighter fabric.

I also have a T3 in khaki. Very nice and the fit is spot on.

You don’t know it, but this is the hat you have been waiting for:

Absolutely the coolest most comfortable hat you can buy. Not even close.

There are nicer more expensive versions if you want a nicer one, but the full ventilation and the suspension inside the hat just blow everything else out of the water.

+1. I wore one to these in south Florida for twenty years. pith tropical helmet. super cool, good air flow, reasonably good sun protection and comfortable. only negative is that they do not hold up well when they get soaking wet repetitively. as stated many different brand out there. I think I actually bought mine at Publix all those years ago for about $15.

I looked into those as well. Reviews indicate that it doesn't vent well, okay for Winter but not hot weather. Brim is also very floppy and even light to moderate wind will blow the brim up allowing sun/rain into your eyes/face.

It can get pretty hot out there training behind our gym. Well into the high 90's on this day...I think I'll go Khaki this time around.

Sorry, missed that you posted a "sun" version of the Seattle Sombrero. That didn't turn up in my search.

I considered that but it was too large for me. I went with the Helios one, https://www.outdoorresearch.com/us/en/helios-sun-hat/p/2434580008008

OP, no snaps but I like that it's packable/rollable. I keep it in a pannier bag during summer rides. The bring is very flexible and if you hit it on something, it just bends instead of knocking your hat off I've found.

I'm half considering getting one of these for summer casual biking haha!

maybe search using that, and you'll widen your options.

on some models, the brims arent wide enough.

Here in the desert, I have moved from wide brimmed hats to Propper BDU caps. Protect my head and eyes from the sun AND acts a a sweat band. Just rinse out in the shower later.

I wear a version of this, the Outdoor Research Sombriolet Sun Hat, for kayaking and other outdoor stuff... very pleased with it...

Been thinking about getting a full brim hat too and stumbled on this one at a local outdoors shop. The no flop brim was actually a cool feature. Haven't pulled the trigger yet. Those Tilley's look nice too.
