Yeah, I know, it's the ad guy in me that made me do the subject that way.

Pulled my bike road bike down a few days ago to try the new rollers and found a nipple had broken and my wheel was far less than round. Finally got to the LBS yesterday and the response was basically "duh, these are alloy nipples and they'll all do this eventually." Sure enough, while they retention the wheel another one pops. The wheels are a full DT Swiss build from a popular builder. I have 10K on the wheels or so. The LBS says rebuild the wheels with brass. Is that the smart thing to do? TIA

Alloy nips are fine if they are well lubed when installed. Gotta keep 'em from corroding. Brass nips are good too.

At risk of offending, get some Neutrons or Nucleons or the Fulcrum equivelant. They rock.

Nipples are poppin' out all over
All over the meadow and down the steepest hill!
Bud’s bike is bustin' inta the bushes
And the rompin' river pushes
Ev'ry little wheel that wheels beside the mill!

Nipples are poppin' out all over
The feelin' is gettin' so intense,
That the young virgin creepers
Hev been huggin' the bejeepers
Outa all the mornin' gories smeared on the fence!
Because they are aluminium alloy...

You can rebuild with AL and save some weight, but you'll have to rebuild again in another 10k. Brass will outlast the life of the rim, but will be heavier. Your call.

...I'd kill for 10K before the nipples pull out, My OPs are good for about 7-8K before it's new rear rim time...I'm sure it has nothing to do with weighing 215 lbs., however....

Marco, I was in Minneapolis today for about 25 minutes. I loved all 25 of them! Cold, windy but pretty close to home!!

For alloy nips to last longer, the spoke should come to the end of nipple. So the head of nipple is threaded to the spoke. If the spoke threads are short of head the nipple is on tension not sheer.
