Lotta conflicting info out there.

Two big questions:

1: mixing the 2 generations of 10s, derailleurs/shifters. Will it work?

2: mixing 9s components in. Can I put a 9s derailleur with a 10s shifter?

1. Yes except 7900 front der, gotta be mated with 7900 LH shifter.

2. Yes, front or rear except 7900. See above.

3. Shimano 10s MTB stuff not compatible with anything else.

To add some info: every road and mtn rear derailleur EXCEPT D/A 74XX series up to 9sp are compatible with road shifters up to 10sp.

Once Shimano went 10sp on the mtn bike, you need an adaptor to make road shifters work.

You can make mtn front derailleurs work with road shifters, but it A. won't be optimal and B. will take lots of fiddling to get it just close
