Track bikes, at least the old school ones, seem about as pure as a bike can be. Some of the new carbon monococque frames leave me cold but a nice clean steel track bike is a thing of beauty.

Those cogs that Tomity illustrates for the AIS team are Dura Ace cogs that have been surface finished, given a gentle touching up to soften the edges, and then chromed.

The EAI Superstar cogs, such as Grant photographed, are made from scratch and in my experience are actually a bit better. I've seen both and ridden wheels with both. Frankly, they both feel fine while riding and are equally quiet (quieter than regular Dura Ace or EAI cogs). The threading on the EAI Superstars is the best I've ever seen -- no glitches, very nicely done, not clogged with finishing products that tend to grind down the threading on your hub, etc. Very pretty. I got one cog to play with early last summer while EAI was testing them, and probably put about 300 miles on it on the track. I have to say it seems to be extremely durable. No track cog will show much more than rub marks at that point, but these don't even show marks. Compared to Phil cogs, I'd say the Superstars are definitely a good bit nicer.

There were two, one a backup. I think the bike for the attempt is in a subway station in Brussels. I have read that the components are not all original. My opinion is that Merckx had no idea the originality would be an issue 30 years on.

The 'notch' in the back is the same, and the rails look right.
It was definitely painted, not a cover.

A track bike properly set up tends to look that way at first. Once you get used to looking at track bikes, it's really quite elegant.

I've been lucky enough to see one in person. We have a big time collector in our area and he came in one day with a Confente track frame along with his #3 of 100 Russian Team Masi. He has brought many unbelievable bikes and parts into our shop for restoration.

Crappy photos that don't do the bike justice, but it was the only camera that had battery power, & the sun is going down quickly.

I'd take some better ones, but I've been waiting FOREVER on that Ferris guy to send me something to put on the head tube. One of those nice headbadges that I don't think ever materialized, an Anvil decal, heck SOMETHING. Maybe a bit of good-natured ribbing will flush him out of the lurker shadows. ;)

hmmm how does one equip a real track bicycle
these days. i meeeeean - one that is used on the
track (not necessarily a kilo record...) for all-round
use. say i have this 05 record kit and and a rig,
what tubie rims, 'bars, and stem does one get so
as to keep it cool, classic, and italian-ish? we're
not talkin' retro, but we're not talkin' disc wheels
or threadless either atmo.
