Was asked by a friend / boss how a commuter bike with the following particulars would be sourced, preferably as complete as possible..

Tire Clearance for kush, and studs in the winter
belt driven
internal hub
generator lights
Lockable out side ( in boston )
prefered anti theft bits
disc brakes

others would be...
drop bar or flat with bar ends ( drop prefered )
generator lights

What are your thoughts?

Sounds like the kind of thing joe bike in Portland builds with stock frames.

I bought a bike from Joe Bike and liked them a lot. Real easy to work with.

I went with a Kona Rove ST, 650b, dynamo hub, front rack and basket, 1 x, fendered, commuter bike. They have good ideas and know their stuff.

i donno,

i think once you get into a dedicated commuter with generator lights and disc brakes, you've probably got a pretty nice ($$) bike with significant accessories hanging off of it that may negate the concept of feeling safe locking it up outside in a big city.

i work in NYC, and what i see are two basic types of commuter bikes, well three really:

1) just use the bikeshare
2) pretty crappy, clapped out bike with cheap parts
3) reasonably nice commuter bikes - with indoor locked storage available.

the idea of putting together a pretty nice bike with generator lights, discs, etc and leaving it locked up all day while you're at work in the city is probably not the best starting point...

just a thought.

Look at Spot Brand or BMC ( the real one) Drop bars and generator will be an issue.

Build a SOMA Wolverine a la carte.

City-specific bikes w/o much of a history or brand appeal (for most cyclists) would probably be a good bet. VanMoof's leasing and anti-theft program have piqued my interest after my commuter was stolen.

I also just came across another "urban" focused bike that ticks most of those boxes (minus drop bars and dynamo). I don't know how many stock bikes come w/ a dynamo but that wouldn't be a hard thing to add on.

SOMA Wolverine is probably best option because you can do belt drive on that frame.

Schindler Hauer makes belt drive frames for the commuter market but I don't think there is a dealer in the area. I'm in Germany often and have rode these on many occasions. Good production commuter bike
