Out yesterday with friend that has a new Canyon bike with tubeless compatible DT Swiss wheels and he got a flat. After 3 pinch flats because the Conti 4000 700x23c tires were so tight that we could not mount the tire, I rode the wheel to REI (closest bike shop) and had them put a new tube which they did but only after a 20 minute struggle. Any good suggestion on what to do other than buy new wheels? Is this the new norm with tubeless compatible wheels?

Unfortunately, yes. Tubeless rims can be tough for mounting clinchers. But the tires will stretch over time, making it easier. The way to speed up the tire stretching is to pump them up to the higher end of the mfg's recommended range for the first few days when you put the bike away at night. Another issue with tight tires is proper seating on the rim. If you get thumping noise and lump in tire after inflating, it's probably not seated right. A quick inflation of the tire to the high range should snap it into place.

And bigger tires if possible. A 23mm tire on a newer, likely wider, tubeless rim is going to be a challenge in most combinations.

Make very sure that the bead of the tire already on the rim in in the center channel as you try to mount the other side. Very important. If it isn't you'll be cussing a blue streak. It if is, you'll be riding again.
