MSR is always a hard race to pick a winner. I am not sure what the weather is supposed to be but I'm going to pick a sort of a dark horse and go with Groenewegen.

Who ya got?

If you want to pick for the special prize, throw your picks in this thread. (https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=232269)

As for MSR, here's the betting odds.

My feel good pick is Degenkolb, but he's just never looked the same after the crash. I'm leaning toward Alaphilippe.

I'm picking Alaphilippe. He's on form, he's confident, he's a good tactician, and he has one heck of a doctor (http://stevetilford.com/2012/04/14/team-doctors/)...

I say a sprinter wins it this year, so Ewan or Gaviria are my picks.

Why are you so surprised by Ewan? he won the sprint behind Nibali last year.

I'm not sure. This year, it seems like a bunch of teams are bringing dual threat teams, with one rider a possibly contesting the sprint, while another looks like a wildcard for a Poggio attack.

I'm not sure if this 'comfort' in having a sprinter in the back pocket doesn't make it more likely for an attack to stick. If a few strong teams have a guy in an attack, it becomes unclear who is going to expend the energy in the group to chase it down.

But doesn't that provide more incentive to chase? If everyone's got a sprinter in their hip pocket, teams will be more likely to chase as they've got their respective aces in the hole.

maybe :)

I think it probably will be a sprint. just saying that if enough teams think they have a guy for the Poggio, maybe they aren't as aggressive up the climb and thus makes it easier for such a split to happen.

If everyone is committed to their sprinter, then for sure, they will chase. Just looking at the Alaphilippe/Viviani, Sagan/Bennet, Nibali/Colbrelli, pairing - I could see how those teams could be conflicted. If a break goes up the road, a lot of eyes will look to UAE with 2 of the stronger sprinters, Gaviria and Kristoff, to close gaps.

Kittel is my pick!

where can i watch this??

trener1

Lotto for Ewan will be committed to the chase and Jumbo if Grenowagon makes it over the hills, along with of course UAE.
So those are 3 teams that are going to be all in for the sprint.

Is he your pick for DFL or DNF? :banana:

Sorry just couldn't resist.

Sam Bennett, young rider that tasted victory recently. He's in good form and if tries to break early he'll take enough riders with him to burn out the rivals for Sagan.

I like Sagan, but he's been sick over the past month. MSR is so long that endurance is every bit as important as speed. Not sure if Sagan has the endurance after his illness. I think it will come down to a small group slightly off the front of a larger pack.

Isn't the NBC Gold app carrying it?.

I would love to see Sagan win it but I just don't know. I like the Alliphilipe and Viviani picks too.

In terms of watching it, I always just VPN the Sporza or Eurosport (Spanish) feed on my burner Mac. In my experience if you stay away from the english speaking streams it works better.

NBC Sport only broadcast races owned by ASO. That means no MSR, no Ronde and no Giro. Bummer.

I agree. He's riding with a ton of confidence right now after a couple more wins at Paris-Nice. Against some of the current best sprinters. He's likely pissed that he's been left off the Giro squad after a hat trick of wins there last year, and his contract will end at the finish of this season I believe. I am hoping Peter rides in support of Sam.

I have learned that when I pick a rider, he never wins. So, I have to pick riders that I think have a good chance of winning, but that are not the riders I am cheering for.

Superstition is messed up. :help:

I missed the registration cutoff. Again. So I won’t be in the mix for the win unless they offer some last second slots for riders who can’t make it.

I’d bet it’s tough.

This is my favorite race each year. I hope it produces a worthy winner. None is ever unworthy but some are more spectacular than others. This is a career defining race, matched in prestige in my eyes only by the Ronde and Paris-Roubaix.

Whatever your thoughts on MSR, it always brings out the best riders. Look at today's top 10:

- Three world road champs, including the only three-in-a-row winner and the reigning champ;
- A three-time world cyclocross champ;
- Two grand tour winners;
- Four monument winners (not including today's win.

Makes Alaphilippe's victory all the more impressive.
