Hello All,

Do any of you have experience with setting up an at-home credit card machine to take payments for your small business?

If so, maybe you could refer me to a good provider of such services and equipment?

Many Thanks,
Fstrthnu

Costco has merchant services. I use B of A 1-800 592-1591 x 52405 . This is Michaels ext. , he was very helpful. You want your machine set-up with CVV2 and address verification to help reduce fraud.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but I think that FreshBooks offers a hosted service that allows small businesses to accept CC payments. See http://www.freshbooks.com/

Hey Lance, I know you're reading this, you're everywhere cool people want to be! Think you can hack into BoA for Faster and set him up with something?

Sure Arch! Better than that, I've set Faster up with usight.com and he upload multiple CC billings as a CSV file or enter one charge at a time over the web. If he want's me to set up his website to automatically accept credit card transactions, that's going to have to wait until I'm finished hacking into the Andreu's home porn movies and solved that insurgency problem in Iraq.

Wow Lance! Tell me, did you really hack into my Serotta forum account or has the Forum Admin been sharing my personal info again?????

Yo Faster, this is Lance. You think I'm not serious? Can you even imagine me not being serious? I'm as serious as the Guns of Navarone!

Check out Usight.com (http://www.usight.com/) or I will drain your bank accounts.

If you use Quickbooks (which most small bizs do/should), then you can use card services through Intuit. It works very well.

About the same, I know... just spoke with a rep. I wasn't aware the fee was nearly as high as Paypal. 2.1 to 2.9 percent.

Thank You,

dont forget to factor in the cost of the additional phone line needed so you can run the card WHILE on the phone with the customer

I once dated this chic who carried around one of those old credit card swipers and a pile of the imprintable reciepts in her purse. She said she was in the people business

2.9% isn't fun but the simple fact of the matter is that the paypal thing is very easy once set up. You can pull your funds out of paypal easily and stick them in your bank account with ease in just a few clicks.

Time is money and there is very little time needed going this way.

I'm just a casual observer of this thread, but are THAT many potential customers set up for PayPal? I know a lot of folks who are real active on the web have PayPal accounts, but I'm sure there are a LOT more folks with credit cards than with PP accounts. No?

Now I'm curious,

My website is setup for POS transactions or phone orders and paypal too. For CC purchases the customer enters there card number in a secure server and I enter it in my machine manually. Since most of my business is retail and not online I pay 2.83% plus .27c per transaction. If 50% of your business or more is phone order or internet you can get it down to under 2%.
You can also get a Omni 3750 IP machine, this is what I have that uses your DSL or other internet provider. It requires a phone line for settlement and system downloads only. Super fast approvals.

I thought paypal charged 2.9% on top of their other fees, which are ~3%.Total of nearly 6%.????

justin,

I work in the business (currently--it's a flunky job I'm working for the next 8 months), feel free to drop me a pm (and no, I'm not trying to sell you anything--in fact I would avoid the [ridiculously expensive] credit card whose company I work for)

--don't go to a bank, they'll hook you up with an iso (independent) who will just act as a middleman between you and the processor (the company who processes your transactions and deposits them in your bank

--don't go for the absolute cheapest, they will get you on the other end and it will cost the same--except you'll have the bonus of horrible customer service (which helps on the weekend, when you try and process a card and get a voice auth referral)

--you don't need a credit card terminal, especially if you're not running 100+ transactions a day

--look into a "basket" type web solution for the actual "device" to run sales, this will integrate into your website nicely and good companies like verisign offer this

--first step is to become a "merchant". drop me a pm and I'll give you a list of about 10 companies you should consider, and the benefits/drawbacks of them

there's a TON of wacky iso's out there that will be more than happy to separate you from your money--be careful. feel free to run anything past me.

Customers don't need to have a PayPal account. You can pay with a regular credit card OR a PayPal account.

The fee is 2.9% or less, depending on how much business you do, plus 30 cents per transaction. No other fees, no fee to have an account.

I think that other web merchant services offer similar deals.
