I'm in the market for a 2018/19 Trek Boone and wondering for those who have one, what the actual tire clearance is that you've been able to make work, and type of tires you've been able to run?

Also, I've heard the drop is interesting on this frame. I'm 6' even, so looking to get the 54cm frame.
Thx!
Chad

I have a Boone and I will clear 35mm max. Bb drop is nice in my opinion, I tend to prefer lower drop on a cx bike. Fantastic bike imho

What does lower drop mean? Less drop or lower BB height? What is the drop on a Boone?

Sorry, lower drop means the bb is closer to the ground. More drop is probably a better statement.

You didn't ask, but that sounds really small. Trek recommends the 54 for 5'6" to 5'8.5". I would be looking at a 58 at your height.

Longer femurs shorter arms for 5 10 and I could barely ride a 54 with a longer stem... a 54 is more than likely a tad small...….. YMMV

54cm is too short. I'm 5'11 and ride a 56cm Boone with 120 stem. I'm pretty normal in proportions and can ride any stock 55/56 frames (bb to top of saddle length 75.5cm and distance/drop from saddle to handlebars 7cm). Great bike - enjoy!

I'm 6'0" even, longish arms, shortish legs. I almost bought a 58 Crockett and I thought the 56 was a touch cramped.

Yeah, if the OP is 6' and doesn't have wacko proportions then the 56 Boone is probably the way to go, as I've found Treks tend to fit a bit smaller than Spec and a lot smaller than CDale.

I'm 5'-11" with shorter legs (74cm saddle to BB) but longer arms (6'-4" wingspan) and the Trek is small even with a 120 stem. With a larger fitting 54cm Crux I use the 120 and it's just at the right size.

all - thanks for the points on the sizing. I've got the 2017 Fuji 1.5 54cm and it's specs I thought compared with the 54cm Boone: https://archive.fujibikes.com/2017/Fuji/cross-153

I'd better schedule a test ride to be on the safe side.

In terms of pricing, and I guess this may be a PM thing, could anyone send me pricing on what they got? The Boone 5 is the bike I'm looking at.
Thanks all!
Chad

6.8bb drop

But that is 32c tires, so put 35's on and your height will of course be more

I am a shade over 6' (and shrinking fast) and I found the 58 fit me best for mixed use. Trek does run small (my Domane is a 60), but they are making some really nice bikes these days, imho.

I am just shy of 5'11", and I ride the 54cm with 20mm setback post and 120mm stem.

The takeaway is that height is only a heuristic for selecting a range of possible sizes; you need to test ride the bikes within the range while accounting for your riding style and preference. I got my Team Shop Boone to go fast on all surfaces, and it has not disappointed me. I was attracted to the geometry, which matched up to previous road bikes. Essentially, I purchased a road bike with wide tire clearance. I also prefer smaller bikes; every shop tries to put me on a 56cm or equivalent (my first LBS purchased TREK [1000; 2001] had me on a 58cm).

Regarding the BB drop, it is quite low at 6.8 for a cx bike, and I would expect it to be an issue on technical fields particularly with off-cambered sections. I found 6.5 to be the sweet spot for CX as it allowed me to do well in both technical and fast setups. But everyone is different, and I had friends who excelled with the traditional European high BB drop - whatever works and gets you on the podium.

Darn, finding a shop that stocks Boone's will be difficult. Anyone ride or ridden both a Crockett and Boone? I do have access to a 54cm Crockett.

Unfortunately that won't be the best comparison since the Boone has vastly different tech vs the Crockett, and it's not simply carbon vs alu.

Best bet might be to ride the Crockett to see if the geo works out but then see if the shop also has a Domane or other road bike with the rear isospeed just to get a feel of how well it works for you. When I tried out the Boone the increase in compliance was noticeable but not necessarily to my liking so it's very user-dependent.

If you are in the NoVA area, you can test mine out.

I just put 40mm Terreno Drys on my mom's 2015 Boone.

40s? I'll be darned. That's good to hear, and thank you for the details!

I’ve ridden both, for my money the Crockett is a killer value. I have put 40’s on mine, but I use a wide rim which likely makes a difference.

I think you can build it up just at about the same weight as a Boone.

I purchased my frame for about 400 used
