View Full Version : What is the fanciest bike you've used as a commuter?

What's the fanciest or least sensible bike you have used as a daily commuter?

Did you lock it to a rack? If not, then where did you keep?

Mine was a Santa Cruz Superlight that I used for a few years when the last 5 miles of my commute was through the woods. It wasn't exactly necessary. :)

I kept it inside with me. But as the only bike commuter in that entire building, no-one bothered to say anything about that.

Eriksen RCR. Keep it in the limited badge access UPS room at the office.

Full Campy Record 11 Denny built Masi 3v. It sits 3 feet away in my office.
Full Campy 11/Paul Raleigh RXC Pro that sits exactly in the same place.
One of the good things about working for an environmental agency is that they love optics staff cyclists provide.

My regular is a Dahon, but I have commuted on my Ti Dean with Campy SR. Both stay right at my desk at the office.

Funny mentality overall, though. People have no issues commuting in a $60k Audi, but have issue with a $5k bike? I do get that there are locking issues, but I have never understood why the commuter is supposed to be a POS when for many, it's the highest mileage bike.

My brodie climbmax before it was old enough to be considered vintage and before people started seriously collecting early 90s mountain bikes.

A Quintana Roo Tri/TT bike rode it 35 mi round trip, kept it inside. The good old days.

Ah, the day when I’ll be able to commute on sr... all my jobs are always 20-30 miles away and don’t have the right environment for bike storage or freshening up before work.

My logic behind it is, the commuter bike gets tossed around a lot. Locked up, scratched, excessive road grime and just maybe not taken care of as frequently as the Sunday or race day cruiser.

My trainer, occasional commute bike.

Patagonia used to pay me to ride my Della Santa to work and I'd park him at my desk. Not the worst commute. These days I'm using a Serotta CSi to commute to the bar. Sometimes I'll lock her up outside, but usually she posts up inside with me and I buy her a drink or three.

Either my Hampsten or my Signal. The Hampsten is ti and has steel fenders, but the Signal has a front rack and rando bag so I don't have to carry a messenger bag. Both are great in different ways.

We have an indoor bike rack at work so we can ride to work worry-free.

I used one of the first production prototypes of the Serotta Hors Cat as an errand bike. To be sure it wasn't stolen the entire bike was painted rattle can flat black.....even the chain and tires.

Despite the fact that it has a then-new Dura Ace kit and nice tubulars you could leave it anywhere. It sat out on my porch in plain view all winter long.

Great bike and freeing to not worry about it.

IDK, Ti makes sense for a commuter. Harder to dent, won't rust, and easy to refresh the finish.

Wilier Zero.6. To be fair, my commute is 35 miles round trip with 2500 vertical feet. Bike stays in my classroom with me. I don't take that one often, but the one I usually use is a focus izalco max that only weighs about 1/2 pound more than the wilier.

My old commuter was my IF Independence, but since no one knows what an IF is in Denver, I wasn't concerned. I took my Legend in once, locked up in a safe place with both a U lock and a Beast chain, but I was so preoccupied during the day in fear of my bike being stolen I went down to the garage 3 times to check on it.

Now I commute on my ti Fierte most days, the IF when I need to carry a laptop. The Fierte is really a perfect commuter, and even thought it was expensive once for the first owner, rim-brake ti is almost free these days, so I don't think it is extravagant at all.

I use an old titanium Redline as my commuter. It is basic here on this forum, but its the fanciest commuter in my bike room at work.

I commuted a few times to work on my Speedvagen (for the hell of it and continuing on after work for a long summer night ride) but was totally paranoid all day, as mentioned above. It wasn't worth it...

I've commuted on all of my bikes:
- Gängl TSX steel built with Record 10 spd & tubular wheelset
- Gängl Custom titanium was built with the Record 10, now just recently built with Record 12 spd & tubular wheelset or Campy Neutron clincher wheelset
- Look 695 built with Super Record 11 & ENVE 4.5 SES tubular wheelset, or Campy Shamals running tubeless
- Look KX Light with Chorus 11 & tubular wheelset

My commute is typically 21 miles one way. If the closest gate to the base is closed, then it is 25 miles one way. My bikes sit in the office within 15 ft of my desk. They are never left outside.

Why have nice bikes if you only ride them on special occasions or really nice days.

My Bilenky Signature Clubsman. It was always kept inside in the corner of a tractor-trailer sized drive-in bay, unlocked. Our location made locking it unnecessary.

A couple of the primary conditions you must consider when choosing which bike to commute on include theft potential and exposure to weather. They're valid considerations and certainly specific to your situation. You're just choosing the right tool for the job.

Really? A Merlin just sold in the classifieds for the same money that I sold mine for 10 years ago, before disc brakes were a thing.

But if you have some rim-brake Ti in 60cm that you want to give away for free, please, send it my way.

Love this thread.

Sometimes, when the weather is just right I do this:

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1964/30814814937_841023c8ff_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/NWZYUH)

I figure that there is very little overlap between the set of people who's eye this bike would catch and the set of people cutting bikes off of bike racks.

Edited to add: Nice bikes are still just tools to be used. When you have the right bike, it's hard to ride anything else.

As others have noted, why ride something of lesser quality and fun for a commute than you ride on the weekend, provided one has secure storage/parking?

I'll interchangeably ride my three bikes (Peg, Parlee, Moots) to work, depending on what moves me on a given day. Two of the three are equipped with tubular wheelsets. Whatever I ride on any given day, the bike sits in my actual office (rather than being "locked up" in a rack outside my office building).

I commute on my custom chapmans all the time. The porteur and the rando get the most use but I commuted for a couple years on my skinny tire one. I bring them into the office but lock up at the grocery store.

I used to ride almost all of my bikes depending on the day, and what kind of ride I wanted to do before/after. All before I switched jobs, and now sadly I am demoted to car commutes most of the week.

Some of them included:

Seven Evergreen w/ ultegra di2 and carbon hoops
ANT townie single speed
Vicious Cycles Electric Warrior w/ full Chorus 11

Santa Cruz Superlite XTR Enve

Sure, I've commuted on all my bikes, including a tandem on take your stoker to work day. But the baddest setup was a Pinarello Prince that had fenders, a tubus fly rack, and these huge Ortlieb panniers. It was the mid 'oughts. I dont think I'd even heard the term "commuter bike". I used to commute on a 3 speed Schwinn Stingray...but that was a long time ago and I was in grade school.

Most recently I commuted for a while on a Colnago C50..

Previously, when I had to leave my bike in the office park garage, I set up a Cannondale T800 for commuting... Never had a problem with it in the garage...it was an invisible green...
