My Crumpton. At the time, I didn’t think it was perfect. With time I’ve realized two things. No bike ever will be perfect. The Crumpton came as close as any has. Too late I learned, don’t chase abstractions. Just ride a bike for what it is.

Serotta Atlanta. 1996 I believe and the classic red to yellow fade paint scheme. Steel fork. Can still smell the frame saver! Also had a T-Max mtb in onyx to magenta fade. 1993 model. Wish I had it too. Unfortunately don't have pics of either.

In 1974 Bill Boston built me custom framset out of Reynolds 531. Had a complete nuovo record group on it complete with a 14-25, 5 speed freewheel. Sold it to help pay for college. I don't remember how it rode, just wish I still had it to compare it to modern bikes.

I do not regret any bikes that I have sold.
Every sale has been to fund a new bike that better suits my current like or needs, or because I was no longer using it.
Every bike I own needs a purpose and must get used.

To me, bikes are tools to enjoy riding- Nothing more than that. Definitely not something to covet like scrooge McDuck.

And I have had plenty of nice customs and rare bikes too. A few Steve Rex customs, Steelmans, steel Landshark, a custom Parlee, custom Legend Ti, custom Ottrott. Pre-Trek Lemonds (Ti and TSX). 10th anniversary Merckx. Custom Clark Kent (steel and Ti).
Do I want any back? Nope- they are rim brake and don't take large enough tires.

The way people churn through even custom bikes shows that the chase is often more important to some than cherishing something or even riding. Easy come, easy go. YMMV but that's been my stance for a couple of years.

(I am just now coming around to that idea with kit, which clearly I've had a hoarding problem in recent years)

It was nothing fancy or expensive. It was a Peugeot I purchased at the Navy Exchange in late 1976 for $155 when I was stationed in San Diego. I put thousands of miles on it, all the while replacing its components with slightly more expensive stuff from a local bike shop.

My tastes eventually evolved to more expensive bikes (Eisentraut Limited) (http://kevinandtammy.net/images/navy/eisentraut_frame.jpg) and I sold my trusted Peugeot to a shipmate. Whereas I used to bring it onboard the ship with me after each ride and store it in the athletic gear locker, he would leave it in the salty air on the pier where it was seldom ridden and dying a slow death. I hated to see that happen to it.

I had this heavy duty single speed paper boy bike when I was 17 (so 45-46 years ago). Probably weighed 45 or 50 lbs. Had a huge basket on the front, around two feet wide and 20 inches long. The wheels had motorcycle spokes, 10 or 12 gauge, and the tires were huge and wide, sort of an early fat bike. I often rode that bike off curbs with a load of 70 or 80 Sunday papers in the basket. Once I was watching a flock of birds flying south for the winter--that flock had to include a thousand birds, it went on and on and on--and I just stared up in the air at the flock so long I ran the bike into a car. Bike was totally unaffected. (Probably not true of the car, but I can't remember. Being a stupid teenager, I just got back up and scrammed.) Plus it was painted bright orange. Bike was probably a pig to ride, but I wish I hadn't gotten rid of it, because it was just so robust. Perfect for the zombie apocalypse.

I sold a custom Hot Tubes cyclocross bike after owning/racing it for 10 years. Regretted selling it even before I handed it over to the buyer.

Bought it back a year later. Happy to have it back in the stable.

Conversely, I sold a custom Condor Cycles road (frame) last year. (My only other custom frame...) Had it built in 1981, rode it for 20 years, then hung it up. Knew I was never going to ride it again but kept it around for a long time...

When I sold it, I had no regrets. Loved the frame, made lots of memories with it. It was time for someone else to enjoy it...

But I think the Bianchi Brava is the one I regret selling more... It had more of a story to it, I rode it more than I ever did the RB-1, and when have you seen another quite like it? I called it the "Italian" RB-2 (Ishiwata tubing, frame built in Japan, Suntour GPX group, and Celeste everything *except* the frame)

Lemond Poprad. Sold when I was moving, but shouldn't have. I didn't understand the appeal of fat tires on the road (probably didn't decrease the pressure enough), and never liked canti's or the cheap v-bakes I tried instead. I should have tried different brakes. Also miss the 177.5mm 94mm BCD cranks... It was pretty dialed. I don't regret it a ton, but I do regret it.

Ok, this wan't one I sold but a frame the I snapped during a race. I had a frame built for a mountain stage race. Back in 1987 it weighed in at 14lbs, it climbed like a dream and it descended fantastically well. The frame was built with Vitus 980, Red S headset, GEL280 Rims 28H on Record hubs, Simplex Jubilee front & rear mechs, Nadax BB with a Super Record Chainset 41/54 rings (Gipiemme made the 41 ring and you needed to file the top of the spider for the chain to sit) and a Campag alloy block 12-24 six speed. I really wish I had it replicated in 753 as it was just lovely

I regretted selling my F8 (first year of production 2014 I think) to "upgrade" to an F10. Did not like the F10 nearly as much. Exchanged the F10 for a slightly used F8 at an LBS. Finding a 59.5 was not that easy. Lesson learned.

Mine was a 3Rensho as well. Candy red 85ish Super Record Export Katana.
I bought it new from a Nashbar shop in town. They had it for a good couple years on display. Sometimes built up, sometimes just frameset. I drooled over it the entire time. It was finally discounted to what I was told, less than they paid. It was mine! I road it for10 years until my position changed due to injury. It had 2 very small rust spots, and no longer fit. I sold it for almost what I paid.
Fast forward. My position is back to where it used to be. I would really love to have it back. I've been looking for a replacement for years.
