I went and bugged OP for advice then did it wrong, d'oh.

I am trying to avoid paying the high price for the real Campy tool (#712, best I've found at the moment is $75). Has anyone out there found a cheap (e.g., Park, Pedro's, etc.) alternative?

thanks

U dont need the campagnolo tool... pedros, sugino and even a shimano will work. THe nouvo record size of cup is pretty much what everybody used back in the day.

If you have a vice, use a bice... another option is use the nut and bolt home tool..

Or just go the shop :P

Adjustable cup lock ring, not fixed cup or left hand cup. But yes, a variety of tool wil work.

Thanks Ultra. Any chance you can easily locate a link to the right thing from Pedro's etc.? I find a lot of things that say "Campy" but aren't specifically NR and I already bought the wrong thing once.

Apologies for cluelessness.

The Sugino toolset is almost a direct copy of the Campy set--I sold my spare set unfortunately, but they do turn up on eBay. I think I sold my set for ~$30...

Here's a set for $50 (although mine had the extractor too--I see people have those listed separately):

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I'm after the tool for the non-drive side. I have an old Campy tool with a single hook similar to those Ultra linked, but it doesn't get good purchase so I want something like #172 that has multiple points of contact.

All I see listed at Pedros is the same wrong thing I bought from Park, designed I think for later model BBs: https://pedros.com/products/tools/pedal-crank-and-bottom-bracket/bb-wrench-campy-6-notch/

Back in the day that I remember nobody had the tool with several notches, The issue with the tool that has one hook is as you said the fit is not right.

Some guys change the curve of the tool so it doesnt slip... but you will need a good grinder or something like that to fix it.

The pedros you are talking about (park aswell) is for the cartridge campagnolo veloce or something like that.. like 30 years after to what you are after.

If you have the hook type of tool wonder if you have a user problem, I do agree that the fit is not perfect but the trick (for me) is to use the other tool to move the cup to tight the lockring while you hold it with the hook like tool.

when snugging down the lockring, on any brand, i always wear heavy duty work gloves as the wrench can slip wacking your fingers. i try to use an open hand when possible

cant say i'm familiar with that exact lockring, but the hozan lockring pliers is a worthy tool to have in the box for a variety of lockrings, and i suspect should work here too?

I tried to find those for the OP... second option is a pripe wrench but those will scratch the lockring big time.

You can make one with a set of old adjustable pliers....never occur to me to do this...

As mentioned, the Sugino gets better grip than the Park. I believe the Dura Ace tool also fits, and has multiple contact points. I have one, but can’t check, it’s at Summer home.

I think we always used var lock ring pliers on recalcitrant lock rings BITD.

User problem may well be the case. It has been a very long time since I disassembled this BB.

If I infer correctly, are you saying that the proper technique for removing the BB is to hold the NDS side ring in place using the single hook tool while loosening the drive side lockring (using something that looks more like a big cone wrench)?

That is, the lockring is what's on the drive side; the NDS piece (with the six notches) is called something else?

If so, once the lockring is loose should I be able to loosen the NDS piece by hand?

I'm holding the Campy tool in my hand now. Looking for a parts #. Don't see one. Other end is for 32 mm (?) head set nut.

I see #712 in a variety of listings, like this one:

I pulled out an uninstalled NR BB and the Park Tools HCW-5 and HCW-4 fit. Have you tried those?

Funny — I don't have those but earlier today I sent a message via the Park Tools site asking whether they would, so thanks for answering on their behalf.

What you need are the 2 below..HCW-5 for the lock ring and HCW-4 to loosen the left side cup. Also use the HCW-4 to hold the left side cup while you tighten the lockring. Then use the otherside of the HCW-4 to loosen the drive side cup BUT..most of those are really tight, and you need something to hold the tool on the flats of the cup(like a Stein Tool) or use something like the last picture.
Right side-fixed cup
left side-adjustable cup with lockring

proper terms.

I have several of the real deal lock ring tools. but all of my tools are packed up right now. I don't see myself needing them as often in the future, so multiples are not needed anymore.

Have you tried Ebay?
