View Full Version : how about this: flat bar short reach brake levers with a clamp that opens?

out on the Jones Loop Bars today and still dialing in. I am liking riding out front on the loop but the brake levers are in the back behind the loop junction. I was wondering if I could install levers in front of the loop junction? Seems nearly all normal levers slide onto the bar and then have a cinch bolt. No way to slide anything onto the closed loop portion.

Don't some levers have a band clamp that is a broken circle that meets at the cinch bolt? Would I be able to open the clamp on these enough to get the clamp around the bar and then bend it back enough to get the bolt to bite in order to tighten? You know how some do with Moustache bars.

Mechanical or hydro? Almost all modern hydro flat bar levers have a hinged clamp. Or maybe you could figure out something with some CX/inline levers, though those are more for scrubbing a tiny bit of speed than grabbing a whole handful of brake (also make sure they are inline, and not terminal in your brake setup).

I don't think you will have good luck trying to fit aero (drop bar) levers on the Jones bars. Different bar diameters.

so whatever would work with those.

For new levers, it might be difficult to find. Road rim brakes use a similar cable travel as cantilever brakes, but in the past 15 years or so, most flat bar brake levers have either been for long cable travel brakes (such as V brakes) or for hydraulic brakes. Flat bar cantilever brake levers today are typically lower cost models, that don't have 2 piece clamps (which are more expensive to manufacture). You might have to look to the used ("vintage") market for a lever like the Avid Ultimates:

and look kinda cool and like they'd work:

Okay, now my curiosity is up: Why would BMX riders want their levers to lock?

getting back to the first reply, i'm unclear if you're looking for inline levers or not.
are you planning on have two sets of brake levers? one next to the grips, and another on the loop?

one set on the outside of the loop.

Inline levers might be just the ticket. They can be set up as a secondary set of levers, and can also be adapted for use as the primary brake levers. (For use as primary levers you might need a bead to anchor the brake cable.)

The Cane Creek Crosstop inline levers not only have a hinged clamp, but they are available in two different models for 26mm bars (24mm clamp diameter) or 31.8mm bars (31.8mm clamp diameter):

that's why this is an interesting conundrum mmmm.

the front loop on Jones Hbar is 22.2

That's why the invented the handlebar shim:

I ride on the front part of my jones bars, and wanted a lever up front. I bought Paul Crosstop levers (hinged) in the 26.0 size, and then purchased the appropriate shim from ti cycles. I was too lazy to put them on, but this would be a good option as primary levers for you.

and see if I will be cool with levers only on the loop. With red bits:

Should be similar to those folks who swear by brake levers on the fronts of their moustache bars.

Most Shimano levers above the Deore level (no experience with the lower levels) have a small button that opens the hinge. You need to use a screwdriver tip or something similar to press it. There’s no need to slide the lever on or off the bar.

Have yet to find them for short reach, caliper brakes.

BTW, I have a set of these I bought off the forum a long long time ago, and never used if you want to get a shim to work on 22.2 vs the 25.4 that they are made for.

No shim required - standard 25.4mm (1") bars taper down to 22.2mm (7/8")at the grip/brake lever mounting area, so the clamps on MTB levers are 22.2mm.

when you remove the cinch bolt does the bottom half of the clamp come off completely? if yes, how does the cinch bolt go about tightening the clamp around the bar?

Yes, the clamp band detaches. As can be seen in the installation instructions, the clamp and the lever body have tapers on their faces, so when cinch bolt is tightened, the taps draw the clamp band toward the lever body.
