Short circuit. Funny. It's called thermal runaway.

I wonder if any of our Adelaide members know the guy.
Hopefully, it is not one of our Adelaide members!!

It is a pretty deadly combination overall
Carbon - flammable
CO2 cartridge - compressed gas
Lycra - flammable
Lithium Polymer (?) battery - flammable
Process hazard analysis would recommend a pressure relief valve on the compressed gas and fire resistant clothing/enclosures on the other parts.

The Pinarello spokesman was kind of a jerk about the whole thing.
Also, that's an amazing amount of reporting on a story that minor.

As non-cyclists, they are probably confusing commercial e-bikes with retro-fitted ones.
The trend towards commercially available e-bikes is a business story. The other, not so much.
Still pretty scary thought as I would think the systems are similar.

it strikes me that it's impressively bad to have a battery fail in use. But I guess that's why many of them have protection circuits

I'd be a jerk, too. Pinarello sells low-power ebikes that probably won't blow up..now one of their bikes is on Forbes in a melted heap cuz a retrofit got too hot.
I've built a few ludicrously powerful ebikes and it's very much up to the owner/builder/rider to keep an eye on temps while hammering up a hill. They're fun, but all that power ain't free. He learned this.

from the article...
"Experts further recommend that e-bikes should be charged during the day and under supervision"
remember kids always watch your ebike while recharging LOL !

Is the e-bike to blame? Or was it it that second burrito at lunch?
