Was going to post this as well. Some very cool insights into training, track differences as well as insider video of fitting and position testing, but it never really goes into WHY 60kph is impossible, only that the current men's record is really far off and it's very hard to even go that fast.
-They don't do the math as to how much more power is needed to bridge the current gap of 5.5 km, nor did they do the math on how much more aerodynamic one would need to be, or a combination of the two.
-They also didn't do the math on current aerodynamic constraints on position and bike design regulations set by UCI - whether there's a way to reduce the either within the current constraints.
Some of the other videos in this series did a better job getting into the scientific constraints, while this one seemed to focus more on the training aspect of the presenter, as well as doing a comparative assessment based on the changes the presenter made. I assume that was to further the visual elements more (ie cool-ass looking equipment, rooms, facilities, and VELODROMES) for more views. So it's a tradeoff of sorts.
Still a very worthwhile view.

As someone who has trained for it, it's brutal. Brutal.

My coach was always "suggesting" I should try it, it'll be fun he said. Given I could do a 49min 25 mile TT. I came to my senses and let my team mates smack me in the love spuds with a cricket bat, it didn't hurt as much.

49 min for 25 miles is fantastic! I think I was estimating 22-23mph for the hour before I crashed.
I think the cricket bat would def hurt less. The worst part for me is I was running a Merckx-style hour. No aero gear and drop bars. My hands and wrists were taking the brunt of the pressure. I was constantly having to change positions a little bit. Ugh.

This was pre tri bars, on a normal road bike. As Obree was coming on the scene in Scotland

Why are current UCI regulations a constraint on someone doing 60km? If you had made this video in 2012, you'd be talking about the "Merckx" rules and how 54 kph was impossible.

Joxter was a super talented Kilometer man... which for me is more impressive yet that he was able to do 40 km in 49 minutes... usually kilo guys dont have stamina to go that far at those speeds. Dont remember he was that bulky tho... shaped more like theo boss maybe? Either way darn fast...
That proves that some times are still doable in regular bikes w/o any problem. Modern stuff is creating wimpy riders :p

As stated in the video the current rules allow TT/Tri bars, but not the "superman" stance bars, which not only allow the rider to get lower and reduce their total area, but the hands moved all the way up create an even sharper/smaller initial frontal area.

WHAT? You need to crank out 450 watts!!!!!!!

JMO: The Hour Record rules should have been kept at Merckx's technology, or opened wide up except for full fairings. The half measures/going backwards/ignoring Obree's advancements leaves us in a weird place. Astericks will multiply, as they already are prolific, in future H.R. entries.
