View Full Version : Is there a suspension-corrected carbon disc fork for older 26" MTBs?

I'm wrestling with the new bike itch after seeing a Hakka MX in person. I have a Litespeed Unicoi 26er converted to a dropbar bike which is mega fun. If I built up a Hakka with carbon wheels it appears it could be close to 6 pounds lighter than the Litespeed. I'll notice that the most when I pull it off the hook and hang it up later, but I have been conjuring with how to drop pounds off the Litespeed. An obvious place is swap the Rock Shox SID 80mm travel fork for a carbon replacement. It would need to be 1-1/8" straight steerer; disc brake; QR axle; and accept 26x2.2" tires. Do these exist?

I gotta say that having the suspension fork is great on the trails, as is the YBB rear end. So there is some benefit to the extra weight. There's no carbon fiber on the bike now so probably plenty of other weight reduction opportunities, though at some point might as well buy the Hakka! I like the Ti frame for this service though, and with the Hakka I need new wheels (it's thru axle), brake calipers, seatpost, yadda, yadda.

Thanks
Interesting that the a-c lengths offered are 410 and 465. They also sell the steel Kona fork (weighs about as much as my Rock Shox) with a 440 a-c length, which is right for my rig.

They stopped making my favorite one in 2013.

Pickup a DT Swiss XRR 445 rigid carbon 26er fork if you can find one. 445 a-c as model would suggest.

Have one on my daughters Ti city bike. They come up occasionally.

Please post of photo of your Unicol. I've been thinking about doing the same thing with my mid 90's Ti MTB.

Work in process. About to get 11s hydro, and waiting on a stem. Really fun bike!

Have you gotten over the pain of having to use the head tube extender? At least with a new fork, you might be able to avoid it.

I did something similar with my 29er hardtail. You may want to see if the Velo Orange Signe (https://velo-orange.com/products/cigne-stem) (Swan) Stem works for your needs.

As for your fork, I got a Pace RC41 fork with a 440 a-c length when I was building up a MTB for my son. Nice fork, but they are out of stock. White Bros. Rock Solid (https://www.ebay.com/itm/White-Bros-Rock-Solid-26-Rigid-Carbon-Fork-/273590253229?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c10#viTa bs_0) comes in 445 a-c and there are some on ebay, though not cheap. Here is another one from eXotic (https://www.ebay.com/itm/eXotic-Rigid-Carbon-Mountain-Bike-Fork-Disc-Specific-44-5cm-for-26in-Wheel-3K/141345552390?epid=1939231429&hash=item20e8d9f806:g:otwAAOSwqLlcMknQ:rk:33:pf:0) in the right length. Pretty affordable.

Thanks, very helpful!
The Cigne stem puts the bars too high unfortunately.
That DT Swiss XRR is the bees knees though!
Yep, it would be nice to ditch the steerer extension...

How bouncy is the rear end on the Silk Ti?

Wow, that thing looks perfect as it sits, I would just ride the crap out of that. Not like making it a drop bar would be worse, but even at their best with a LD stem, I think the raised front end can never look as good as a
properly set up trail bike. Man I always wanted one of those!
