good afternoon paceline team:

looking for suggestions for awesome 40-70 mile (3-5 hrs) bike ride in the mendocino area. open to pure road or gravel, depending on what kind of bike i can rent.

also, anyone familiar with a bike shop in the area that will rent me something serviceable?

i'll be driving up from SFO...

thanks in advance, this forum never fails me with excellent suggestions and advice!

If you do a search across the hall for "Reno to 'Cino" you might find some routing info. Pretty much all I've got.

I would contact doomridesout across the hall. IIRC they moved to Humboldt County a few years back. Might have some suggestions for MendoCo.

That route was a little sketchy. I would not ride that alone. The Mendocino Grasshopper route is the one you want.

There's a very scenic loop that I've always wanted to do. Starting in Mendocino, take Comptche Ukiah Rd. Take a right on Albion Little River Road, and follow the PCH back to Mendocino. I don't have the exact profile numbers, but easy enough to map out.

If you do it, please give me feedback...

yes, i'm familiar with the R2C route you guys cooked up houston, and unfortunately "epic" is not in the cards for this short trip, but the other ideas are excellent. will be mapping.

Fish Rock from Booneville is awesome. Fishrock rd. itself is a really steep, scenic dirt road.

yup.

great stuff.

what i really need now is a shop to rent me a gravel bike, or at worst a MTB.

Bring a good set of lights to be seen if you're going solo.

A few years back a buddy organized a four day tour basically from Mendocino to Ukiah over many dirt, gravel and rural roads, I did not attend. The post-ride stories were epic and in many instances very scary. They stumbled across an illegal grow (they assumed) where they were told at gunpoint to get the F'ing Hell outta there, while riding beside a river came upon a young, drunk group of locals shooting at rocks and were harassed by a couple belligerent locals in 4x4s who evidently didn't like cyclists (or anyone probably).

Be careful, be safe, especially if riding alone. Maybe strive for less off the beaten track routes than you'd otherwise want.
