Just mounted these up and am a little underwhelmed in that they only measure 31.5mm on my H+ rims with tubes. Seeing that my 28mm GP4000's are 30.5 I was hoping for 33-34MM. On a positive note they were the easiest tire I have ever mounted, no tools and no skin. Ride report when the temps are above 50' as I am a fair weather rider and just got back from being in Hawi for the last month+. Cold ucks for my old joints. If you ever get to do Hawi, Waimea, Waikoloa Village loop ride it is a must do. Got lucky with little to no wind the whole month. The biggest threat is not flats but side wall cuts from the lava rocks. I was proactive in checking every few hours. Will take some Gator skins next time.

Look at the bright side, they are closer to their advertised tire width.

Continental tires have historically treated me very well.
I am very much looking forward to hearing more about these tires and trying them.

That climb on Kohala Mtn Rd is no joke. Drove it and could only imagine what that climb outta Hawi must be on a bike.

How tall are they?

I’ll have measurements for the 700x25 TL’s on HED plus rims tomorrow once my 80mm valve stems show up.

Are these the clincher or tubeless version?

Those are the clinchers in the OP. Tubeless has TL on the label.

IMO a long but not hard climb. The only hard part was there is no shoulder but little to no traffic as the few cars up north take 270 which is a much straighter and less hilly road. I rode late morning so the few people I saw were mostly friendly. The only part I found a little sketchy was the decent on Waikiola Rd with a 20-30mph tail wind the few days we had wind. I don't ride wired, but by riding partner said he hit 48 several times. Going north on 19 lots of cars but then you get off on 270 and it's like riding on Hwy 1 in NORCAL back to Hawi, basically flat with a few hills. 75 miles roundtrip. Reminded me a lot of the riding I do in West Marin, crappy roads, lots of cows, and no shoulders. The big difference is when I left yesterday it was 78 and when I got home last night it was 29.

I want ro try the tubeless version in 32 as a replacement for gravelkings but dont like to hear that they are undersized. I was hopping more like 33mm myself

Lol “undersized.” It’s off by 0.5 mm, it’s made of rubber— how close do you want it to be?

Sounds like they adjusted the casing for modern wide rims, or to be closer to the industry norm. At some point, if everyone is using wide rims, it makes sense to adjust the tire (or the label on the tire) so we don’t exist in an alternate reality where “32” = 34.

This was one of Continental's "stated" goals with the 5ks. My 28mm GP4kS2 measure 33 on my 25mm wide rims, so I guess I'll probably go with 32s as I like the width (and lower pressure)

Unlike clothes where 34" waist means a 32" size pants :) maybe it's "reverse vanity" sized (austerity sized?!) Looking forward to trying them out!

I am hoarding some serious cash to buy up any discounted stock of 4000s II 25s and 28s. Oh, they ride so well with my pacenti wheels.

up to now i have sworn off of conti tires, after a bunch of sidewall failures.

on paper these look pretty good, so i'm looking forward to some longer term reviews of these tires with regard to overall quality and durability.

i dont care if a race tire wears fast, as long as the tread wears out before the rest of the tire fails.

I am with you Angry pal, had the same experience with previous vers. of Conti. The 4000s II won me back.

good to know!

basically every vendor who sells tires has the 4k's on sale these days, since the 5k's were announced, so they should be easy to come by cheap.

About a month ago it was reported over at WW that the 5K's are real close to advertised widths on wide rims.

Tubeless 700x25's on HED + rims are 26.6mm @ 75psi. They were fairly easy to mount, used a tire lever to finish them off. No air compressor necessary, also no sealant in there yet.

I’m not sure I’d run the Jets tubeless. The valve could damage the carbon faring.

for wide tires, the question of me is: for about the same price how does the 4K compare the gravel king?

How long ago has it been since you had these failures? That "problem" only seemed to crop up for a short time and it was years ago. I've probably gone through 30 or more pairs since the one time I had that issue many, many years ago.

it certainly has been a while since i've used a conti tire. not only for the sidewall issue though, i always thought vittoria and veloflex road tires rode much nicer than anything conti, IMO.

those gaps in "feel" are probably much smaller these days with lots of high quality tires available. I'll certainly give the 5k's a shot when i am in need of a pair.

The rim in question is not a modern, wide rim. It is 17mm at the internal measurement. A 20+mm internal width will spread the tire more and create a better (IMHO) tire shape.

The fairing is reinforced around the valve stem area to prevent this.

Is that your Ritchey Road Logic? I'm looking for one of those and would love to see how these tires look clearance wise in the frame.

I have the Conti 28mm 4000 on H+'s on the Ritchey. They measure 30.5. If the 32MM GP 5000's are all 31.5 then yes it would work on the 2018+ Ritchey's.

I'm really curious about the 32mm 5k in tubeless, but I don't think they are out yet. The bike I would use them now is a bit tight with 32mm tires, so it's good that they are undersize

I don't know if this hits your cheap threshold, but Excel is currently selling a 4 pack of 4000S ii for $125 which puts you in the free shipping zone, FWIW.

thank you C-pal!

I can't lie, I can't hide, I can't deny...so I am just gonna say it anyway...it's not quite cheap enough for me yet. :p Think $20-25 a pop....free shipping!

I got both.

Gravel King is a bit more durable, more puncture resistant, but also less supple. Perfect for winter and less than ideal riding conditions.

I just don't see the benefit of holding tires in storage purchased on a sale any more, so many tire deals, constant new offerings, stable or small increase in pricing.

I now only keep one set of tires for damage back up or an unplanned new build, long term advanced buying of multiple tires is a false savings for me.

Most often when I am ready to use them they have sat, dried out and hardened beyond their new/original performance advantage, no deal.
