i'm trying to get used to the reddit boards but the difference in layout from vbulletin makes it tough to switch back and forth. is there a way to mimic the simple vbulletin layout or at least customize the way threads are presented?

When you say threads, do you mean the listing of discussion topics in a subreddit, or the comment tree that occurs when you click into a topic?

For the former, Reddit offers three different views: Card, Classic, and Compact, which can be selected at the top.

For the latter, I don't know of anything. But maybe the Reddit Enhancement Suite (https://redditenhancementsuite.com/) offers some customization.

Personally I'm not a fan of Reddit because users can't bump posts and there are no stickies, so information is dispersed across many different posts, and there's a perennial new user question (see also eternal september (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September)). I appreciate how resourceful the Paceline is, in contrast.

the latter. i'm finding it counterintuitive the way you can post replies to an original post or replies to replies or replies to replies to replies, etc....
i suppose you can argue that it makes sense to organize that way by 'conversation' but i find the linear timeline of vbulletin to be far more intuitive.

Mobile or desktop?

For desktop, the aforementioned enhancement suite. For mobile I like Antenna.
