So I'm changing the cables on my old 2000 chorus group and I have these cables, which have been in storage for years. What's unusual are the the pre-installed ferrules. Did they intend these to go into the shifter body or into the frame? I can't remember which shifters these came with, maybe 09 Centaur?

If OP we're here I'm pretty sure he would say no ferrules in the lever bodies. So those ends with the pre-installed ferrules go in the frame.

Like Solanum tuberosum says:

" Clean cut of housing, particularly in 'gumby' shaped levers, 2009 and later.

Make sure wee brass washer is in the hole in the lever (again, 2009+ levers)..

A little bit of grease on delrin ramp..again, Gumby levers.

Make sure der housing long enough, and behind the hbars 'seems' to be smoother, older or newer levers. For 2007 and older levers, I use 5mm der housing and brass ferrules from Wheels manufacturing.

Der housing, YES ferrules in lever, 2007 and older. NO FERRULES for BRAKE HOUSING in either lever (pet peeve of mine, digging those things out).

2009 and later, NO FERRULES in the lever for der or brake.

I use 4mm brass ferrules for the der housing, again, 2009 levers and later.

I squirt a wee bit of Boeshield into the housing for ders, nothing for brake.

I also dab a bit of grease on inner wire ends, brake and der, as they go into lever."

and there you have it!

Not true for 2000 ERGO. Actually, all ERGO, 1992-2008, had ferrules for the der housing..NONE for the brake housing, the the levers..those ferrules can go into the levers or at the cable stuop, your choice.

Thanks, all my older shifters, had shifter ferrules installed but I wasn't certain if the ends mattered on these. I wonder why they stopped doing this? These are nice!

We should make a thread for this campy ferrule stuff and sticky it to the top. So confusing.

Pretty easy

2009+-Der-no, brake-no

How do you determine the years

That should be part of the sticky

Many resources, I find this page as good as any: https://branfordbike.com/new-page

What Year is Your Ergo Lever?

1991 to 1997 7, 8 and 9 speed Ergo levers had pointed hoods and a sweeping curved brake lever as in first picture below.

1998 Athena and Veloce 9 speed, and Mirage 8 speed, Ergo levers had pointed hoods and a sweeping curved brake lever as in first picture below.

1998 Record and Chorus 9 speed Ergo levers had rounded hoods and a flatter, curved brake lever as in second picture below.

ALL 1999 to 2008, 9 and 10 speed Ergo levers have rounded hoods and a flatter, curved brake lever as in second picture below. 1999 to 2008 Ergo levers are the ONLY models to have Ergo Brain buttons on the rubber hoods and matching ports in the Carbon plastic bodies.

Levers 2009 and later have an bend towards the center of the bike at the top of the hood, and a more pronounced double curve of the brake lever.

Somewhat related (happy to peel off into a separate thread if preferred)...

In the past I've always gone out of my way to pick up a 10s campy cable kit (running early 2000s 10s Record) when it's time for recabling. But that feels like a hassle - are the current 11s cables/housing compatible? (I assume so, but it's one of those days). Alternatively, any good options for compatible housing/cables from other brands?
