saw this on instagram this morning, and was immediately "spoken to". just wanted to share it here. it is a beautiful photo and pulls at my heart strings, so to speak. my wanderlust chromosomes are tingling for a cycling trip.

feel free to post others.

Lysefjorden? There's a rollerski race and a triathlon that use that course. It looks incredible. That tunnel blows my mind.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. We (in the Northern hemisphere) are 9 days away from the shortest day of the year. Meteorological winter just started 12 days ago, and has several more months to go... in other words, welcome to the hellscape -- get used to it.

Inspiration is cheap. Discipline son, that's the ticket to success. Anyone can be inspired by an image, a motto, a pep talk. That's good for a couple hours of motivation. Discipline, that's doing what needs to be done even when you aren't inspired. Maybe even when you don't want to do the thing that needs to be done.

Just sayin'.

Now, you want the see the other side of glory? The pain, the hollow feeling of reaching your limit before the finish line, the absolute sacrifice required as a rider and team mate, then look no further than Gianluca Brambilla's face as he gasps for air on the final climb of Strade Bianche. :)

A lot of Houston's photographs in the 'gravel bikes' thread are inspirational.

I'll also offer this one, of the Gavia:

I don't have a photo to show for it, but I recall once when living in Switzerland that I was out MTBing in the Alps (cant remember where).

It was not technical riding at all, but I was pedalling way high up in an Alpine area and stopped to admire the scenery - I was buried amidst wildflowers on a two foot wide trail with green groundcover, the sound of cowbells (not for CX - the REAL thing!) and towering snowcapped mountains in the distance. The weather was cool (high up) but I was sweaty (hard work) so the temperature was just perfect.

It was one of the few times that I have been riding in a surreally beautiful landscape - the kind that you would see on the cover of a mountain bike magazine in the 1990s.

I actually think I love MTBing more now, but most of my rides these days are within an hour from home and involve parking in a parking lot and pedalling through dark, muddy forests (that are really fun, but not nearly as picturesque)!

Although I enjoy looking at the photos of the epic climbs, the ones that really do it for me are ones that I took on a memorable ride.

This is from the start of "day 3" of the Mile Failte. I'd ridden through the night, more than 230 miles since I'd started "day 2" with only a short nap and this was the sunrise.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/f52df99d6b53db139f05c8abc90022ea.jpg

Apparently Joosttx lives in heaven.

More to the point, I'm in SF/peninsula every month and have never ridden in Marin. I don't know whether to bring a road, cx and mtb...

cx or mtb is the way to go. CX will get you anywhere. That morning was a special morning I had to leave the house around 5:00am to get to Bolinas Ridge at sunrise.

Man if you eat pecan pie, you better be ready to ride a century the next day to offset all the bad effects of all that Crisco and Karo syrup. (no thanks) Sometimes it's better not to know what the ingredients are to some of our favorite foods. I'd rather save my garbage calories for fermented grain beverages.

Man, I used to love croissants until I saw how much butter goes in.
