Where would you go for a relatively cheap cycling vacation?

Good hiking would be a bonus.

If this were a younger crowd the options of what to do in such a situation would be way more interesting!

Tucson? I’ll be there the first three weeks of March working a little and hopefully riding a lot.

Mid March is Spring Break time, places like Austin might be a little insane.

Look into an Airbnb in Fredericksburg or Comfort, Texas Hiill Country. Miles and miles of beautiful empty country lanes, numerous State parks for hiking. Early spring the weather is beautiful.

With a little research, accommodations can be found inexpensivly.

My parents live between Fredricksburg and Kerrville.

Countless riding opps when we go down every spring.

I left my De Rosa there for visits, but I'm looking into a gravel bike as well.

Hard to beat that area. imho

I'd be heading for somewhere in Southern Utah. Great riding (both road and mountain), spectacular scenery, hiking trails for days . . .

I'll just leave this here:

How about a road trip?
3 weeks alone in one place might be stretching it a bit, unless you really like to settle in.
It’s a great time to explore the Southwest. Several stops in places in the Canyon Country (Bryce and Zion come to mind), Boulder City (Lake Mead trail, Hoover Dam)/Las Vegas area(Red Rock Canyon), Anzo Borrego or Palm Springs areas, and San Diego, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties of California would be a lovely at that time.
Whatever you decide, have a great time.

I was waiting for someone to say this....it doesn't carry as much weight from a single guy without any kids

Flagstaff, weather could be iffy but lots of opportunities.

I like Scottsdale/Fountain Hills for great riding and lots of hiking opportunities.

Like others have mentioned, road trip. There are places I've ridden on road trips where I wished I had more time. Roswell, NM looked like a lot of good riding. Albuquerque, I've barely scratched the surface and Santa Fe is just up the road. Last year I cycled Petrified National Forest, kind of like riding on the moon and totally worth it. I'd like to ride Grants, NM. Palo Duro Canyon.

Close to home, get a room at the Peachtree Inn in Fburg and ride a different direction each morning.

:hello: hahahahahaha. Too early in the year for this but I’m flying to Banff and heading south if I EVER have this opportunity. Wherever you go I’m sure it’ll be a great mental reset.

We went on a camping trip down there in Terlingua when I was 11. Saw the mayor too. It was a great experience.

That sounds amazing. I negotiate a week in advance to go mountain biking for four hours!

My wife went to Denmark for a week last month and while it was really fun with me and our kids, I was feeling a bit of envy as she sent photos of Nordic sunshine :).

Vegas more for the hiking/other non-cycling activities.

Southern UT for the biking.

Biking in Vegas isn't so much fun at times.

I was thinking the same thing, but too early in the season for sure. I think I would fly to San Diego and point my knobby tires south on the Baja Divide route and see how far I get!

I would drive/fly to Phoenix, then go to Sedona. Too hot? go to flagstaff. too cold? go to phoenix, or down to tucson.

If you are out of Austin, it might be cool to do a bike tour from the house? Head west get as far as you can, then ship the bike home and hop on a flight.

I have been mulling this one over and over, because I haven't had three weeks to myself since my 20's. I can hardly imagine it.

But to keep it low-cost, I was thinking I might head to a National Park or somewhere off-season with little to no traffic.

Yosemite would be great. Bears are asleep, and even if you gotta leave the park for rides, recovery day hiking through the valley or from the lodge on Mt. Hoffman would be mind-healing.

2 weeks in Joshua Tree would be beautiful, and recovery days or a week in Palm Springs could be amazing.

Lake Tahoe. Or Truckee might be cheaper?

Nantucket would be deserted right now...

Wherever I went, legal cannabis would be a great way to avoid the books & wine vacation. That dream always ends up just wine and late mornings, as I recall.

It's beautiful there, but f I'm flying to Utah in March it's with skis. I'd miss the family before 3 weeks were out, but I'd love to have three weeks of skiing -- maybe taking a day off each week?

It's not going to happen before kids 2 & 3 are off at college, if then. Let's hope the knees hold up.

Ok first what you're gonna need is a big bag of weed, some kind of alcohol, an xbox then move all your bike cr*p into the living room for a nice mechanic project.:beer: (just kidding...sorta....what I would do if I was found myself in such a predicament...(probably this mentality is why I'm still not married nor have kids:confused: ) :p)

Somewhere in AZ as many others have suggested. I'd look for a couple of fairly inexpensive VRBs so you could move around a bit. However, three weeks is a long time. Personally I think I might start to get a bit bored unless I was meeting/riding with others during that time.

Looks like the Cactus Cup Mtn. Bike Race is March 8-10 and the Tucson Bicycle Classic is March 1.

Sorry, but I don't know of any hikes in Vegas that would rival the likes of Zion's, Bryce, etc.

Valley of Fire and Red Rock have some decent hikes. I'd agree, not the likes of Bryce or Zion, but Bryce and Zion also don't have anything to do really besides hike or bike.

at least vegas you can gamble, take in some shows, go to a gun range, do some hot laps at the speedway etc.

3 weeks of hiking/biking is a long time, granted vegas is still driveable from bryce and zion (around 3-5 hours each way)
