I got talked into racing again; gonna be mostly crits.
I don't want to beat up my Look 585 so I'm looking for something:

Cheap
Stiff
Aggressive geometry
Rim brakes
Mechanical shifting

I want an Allez Sprint but I've seen CAAD12 frames for way less money.

Thoughts?

The FaceBook group "Online Swap Meet for Cycling and Triathlon" has used Allez Sprints as low as $400 or so, but I can't vouch for the condition or cosmetics of those...

What size?

Evo (56): $750 shipped - https://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=231118

edit: nvm, didn't realize it's an electronic only frame

You see a lot of Cannondale frames at the crits around here for all the reasons you checked.

You won't go wrong with a CAAD 12.

Allez Sprint 1Xs go for cheaper than the 2Xs. I've seen the basic framesets of either version go for cheap on a multitude of venues.

That said, CAADs are kinda the tried-and-true, gold standard of aluminum crit bikes.

As long as the geometry works for you, you won't go wrong either way.

The used crazy cheap primus mootry in the classifieds and some fast wheels.

hey...
that RL speaks to me. I've known Paul for 25ish years. It would be cool to be on a RL again.
not sure about the fork, though.

I like the Allez Sprint but the CAAD12 is fine too. Thing about the Allez, even though its aluminum it's still knocking on the door of the premium bikes with regards to performance. Not much is compromised.

VYNL - Not sure if they're producing right now though

If I were looking for an amateur-level crit bike today, it would be a Cannondale CAAD Optimo 1 (https://www.cannondale.com/en-us/bikes/road/race/caad-optimo/caad-optimo-1?sku=c14101m1044) or Specialized Allez Elite (https://www.specialized.com/us/en/allez-elite/p/184449?color=302108-184449&searchText=90020-4244). Compared to more expensive offerings (e.g., CAAD13, Allez Sprint), they have standard BSA, threaded bottom bracket shells, 27.2mm round seatposts, and standard, rim brake mounting. Swap out the wheels for something lighter/more aero (and possibly swap out the brakes if the generic OEMs are not up to the task) and you're ready to race.

better yet, get a CAAD10.....effectively very, very similar to the 12 but they can be had for a song. I bought a Record/Chorus equipped bike for $500. It is shockingly good and I don't worry about it getting any dings.

I'm not sure if folks know that they are responding to a 2 year old thread.

I did look at that Gaulzetti and wonder whether it was still available...
