My cousin wants a recreational bike to ride inside the warehouse during his down time at work...which he has a lot of

His preference is a retro cruiser and or BMX and wants to shop in the suburbs of St. Paul. What shops can you recommend?

Grand Performance always treated me well when I was in the Twin Cities. I raced for them for a few years back in the late 90's too. Great operation.

Er, might be outside the focus your friend is pursuing though now that I think about it. Might be worth checking out anyway.

Second on Grand Performance, Dan is an awesome guy.

I don't know what a guy needs to ride in a warehouse. Would a stationary bike and a stand for an i-Pad be best? Warehouse floors can be slick and busy. For cruisers in San Diego, not surprisingly, we have shop specializing in beach cruisers but our best shops don't sell them. Would a comfort bike at twice the price of a beach cruiser be a good buy in case he decides to ride outside when Spring arrives?

Clearly you will need to seek out a cool bike from the Twin Cities.

GP is two minutes from my house and I'm in there a couple of times a week.

They are very customer driven and Dan could probably order whatever you would like.

Another option: Would any of you locals have a suitable bike...he is 6'1" 230 pounds. tall old school mtb, newsboy special, hybrid

My daughter lived in the Twin Cities for a few years, raced, and worked at Grand Performance. Nothing but good things to say about the vibe and work place there.

Lots of GP love in this thread!! I'm another one who used to race for the club and have spent a lot of time gabbing with Dan on group rides or races. We used to be TT buddies and he set me up on a really sweet P3SL back in the day he got from a friends shop in Madison. For those GP alum, I bet most of us have ridden with Charlie and I'm pretty sure he's still at it.

for a cheap single gear bike I'd look at the Express Bike shop on Selby or Capital Deals on Smith above the high bridge. I really like Express as they are a non-profit and I've donated a ton of stuff there. The guy who runs Capital is very focused on commuters and city/family type riding and is super positive and a great ambassador to the non racer side of things.

Nothing against GP as Dan is one of my few Facebook friends, but there are some better fits for this type of bike.

I suggest Now Sports in Arden Hills and St. Paul. They can fix him up with a nice cruiser, although I don't know about a BMX bike. And I second the suggestion for Express Bikes. They have all kinds of cheap bikes, and I have donated tons of stuff there myself.

And I know he said the suburbs but the shops in St. Paul itself are easily accessible.

Surly Lowside for the bike. Any of the above for the shop. I've never been to GP, but with this much love here they must be good! Behind Bars, One on One, and Perennial Cycle are my fave shops in the twin cities.

Don't know about the other two, but I really liked One on One.
