Hi all,

For my new/used bike purchase (Colnago Carbonissimo) I need a 140 "Jerk" approved stem.

Some requirements-preferences:

Black

1" steerer tube

European

Reversible logo's

and preferably 31.8..but a 26.0 is not a deal breaker.

As always, thank you all in advance,

Steve

What he said, atmo.

I recently realized I actually own one of these - Oval Concepts makes aluminum stems that Seven resells. I've used it for three years without a care. And it's way purty, atmo again.

If you need to get a 140 your options are greatly reduced.

I use Deda Newtons. They fit your requirements and I have three of them which all work fine.

You will have to have a shim for the 1" steerer.

Not to hijack a thread, but why on earth would any but the most flexible humans need a 140 stem?

I have a 74" wingspan, and I can't tolerate anything past a 110.

I just put a 120 on, and I had to move my seat forward 6mm. Still it feels weird.

Do you use a 140 because you get really small frames for racing?

I've got just what you need sitting at the shop...

NOS 1" 140mm Cinelli Grammo (26.0) Just what a euro trash Carbonissimo needs...

Those grammo ahead stems are not bad. I have one and it is 140 and is nice.

Here are two examples of bikes I know of which have 140 stems. Neither is extreme and both benefit by having proper length stems. My position is not contorted on either bike by having a longish stem.

Ask the "Jerk/Obtruse". He will explain it all to you and more.

But, its not a "one size fits all" world. We are not all 6' tall with 34 inseams. Some of us are 6' 5" with 33" inseams and require lots of length.

Ok, so now you dont have to ask the "Jerk".

its about weight distribution....

storytime:

One of my teammates is a strong kid -- just started freshman year at Wofford, lettered in cross-country for a state championship XC team in high school, good athleticism. However, he was nervous in races all the time, and kept crashing. I finally get the chance to ride with him and look at him on the bike. a 56cm with a 100 stem. Hmm. Saddle forward on the rails. Double hmm. Our wonderful, incompetent sposonor shop (that I never deal with...I drive an hour round trip to see tall bald yeehawfactor, fstrthnu's gawky old junior teammate, and their short hairy boss) sold him that 56 -- instead of the 54 that he should be on -- because its what they had on the floor, and because "all he needed was a shorter stem and the seat moved up to get his knee over spindle." No wonder the kid freaked out with the thing up around 30....

Listen to that guy who cuts up his cycling caps just like andrea tafi...you can make any stupid thing "fit" -- its about how it handles.

Or 6' 6" with a 36 inseam. I had a Ritchey 140 on my Bianchi Reparto Corse. Nada wrong with it, and it didn't look funky at all.

What about a group hug with everyone that uses a 140 stem?

only if the hot chicks on the board use 140s

In the big picture, 1 cm increments are pretty small.

Given that people who ride bikes with 700c wheels vary in size from about
5' to 6'6", that's a spread of about 45cm.

Why do people get all freaked out about 1 or 2 cm's difference in a stem?

1 cm is only this much: >........< more.

If you use Campy hoods you need 1 cm longer stem to fit the same as on Shimano hoods. ATMO

SCS:

The Carbonissimo uses a 1 inch steerer tube Star carbon fork. Same fork as used on the C-40. I have a 140 Colnago-ITM with the eccentric 1" shim so it can be used as a -17 degree stem. Picture attached. If this might work for you, PM me and we can follow-up.

No spam intended but I know 140's are getting scarce and with a chance to build up a Carbonissimo right (no wacky -8 riser stem) it's worth a shout-out.

There is a 140mm Oval Concepts R700 on ebay right now (26.0). It should be easy to find - search for "Oval Conepts", it's spelled wrong in the listing. No bids yet and it starts at $20.

(Just happened to be looking for Oval Concepts myself, no connection to the seller.)

Oops, didn't mean to step on CarbonTi's offer, didn't read that far into the thread.

I have nothing against using shims...

I actually thought the thread about seat post shims was quite comical.

In an industry where very little conforms and there are few standards, why not have a $5.00 part that standardized a whole slew of parts (seatposts) or anything else.

Anyway, not to start a controversy or flame war, I have no objection to using shims and actually have a couple-three in my parts bin.

The search is over!

Thank you all. I purchased the 140 "Jerk approved" Colnago stem from CarbonTi.

I'll post pictures when I have it all built up.

Maybe stating the obvious but ideally you would not move your saddle to accomodate stem length - saddle to BB relationship should remain constant at all costs.

I like Thomson X2 but be aware that at 80 deg you would be 4 mm lower than 84 deg and that is the trigonometry for 120 mm - 140 mm would be grater diff. I like the look of a long stem, they look racey. Anything below 110 mm IMO looks short and stubby. I am sure many would disagree. You will note many pros have long stems for length of course but also I understand a bnefit some like is less twitchy steering when eating, gathering bidons etc.

i'm 5'11" and have 140s on most of my frames. i have longish arms. 140s may be more common than folks think.
