New helmet integrated crash Sensor

I've been using the free Road ID app for a couple of years now. While it doesn't have crash detection, it will send alerts out after a set amount of time to those you choose. It doesn't eat up my battery. Did I mention it was free? :bike:

I like the idea, but after I saw this, the first thing I thought was, why does this need to be built into my helmet? Why can't this be an app on my phone?

Not my field at all to know if it is possible, but certainly seems like it should be.

If my Fly cameras can detect a crash and save video, my phone should be able to know when I am on a ride and have crashed.

I don't own a phone, I really don't want one. I don't have a crash detector - I know when I've crashed. Even if I did have both of those, there's nobody coming to save me. I'm on my own, often lost, miles from home in dangerous conditions.

20 years ago that's how everybody rode their bike.

or you could embrace tech that can help make your safer/possibly save your life.

Yes we can all wax poetic about how men were hard men and did all this dumb stuff and never got hurt... till they did.

This can be a good thing.... I just got one of those garmin radars... its an amazing device for those who ride alone... Sure I have been fine without it but I really like having it now. Its like riding with a light, I have been without one and been fine but now I always have one

People do more "dumb stuff" now than they did back then. there was this thing called responsibility. It would be nice to think that people could have both - modern technology and communication AND the responsibility to not get into life threatening situations, but that's not how human nature works...

ANGi is a helmet-mounted sensor using an accelerometer and gyroscope to measure the forces transmitted through the helmet in a crash. It’s small, fixing to the back of the helmet, and doesn’t add much weight to the helmet.

works great on iphones but couldnt get it to work on Android despite multiple emails and a back and forth with the company - if the new ANGi sensor fixed those issues, this might be the stocking stuffer of the year for me.

Yes IceDot was sold to "The big S" and you can get a sensor separate from a helmet. Several of their helmet models come with the sensor. It is suppose to work with Android, I will be trying that out to see for myself. I am good friends with the creator of IceDot and it was basically a one man show. When he sold the brand he went on board to further develop the sensor and app to go along with it. With "The big S" behind it the sensor can reach capabilities he had in mind. I have tried to use other safety features to try and give my wife some piece of mind, and am hoping this will further that.

Apple's new iwatch has software you can enable to decide of you have fallen while running and call for help.

with this in mind, i imagine it will only be a little bit of time before many of the connected fitness trackers will be able to do the same thing for a variety of activities. this should be relatively cheap for most people to be able to get their hands on in the reasonably near future, i bet.

this sounds like a reasonable statement until you take into account reality.

what most people are talking about here is riding on a quiet back country road alone. that sure doesnt sound like a life threatening situation until some bozo in a pickup truck with bald tires, clapped out suspension and texting on his phone whacks us and leaves the scene.

You know, it occurs to me that one place this kind of technology could really be useful is mounted in other sports helmets, such as football helmets. The sensors could be used to detect not just that one big incapacitating hit (like a crash), but also to accumulate all those smaller hits that the head takes. This data could be used to take players out the game when they've been accumulating too many smaller hits (to help limit long term brain damage), and not just wait for a big concussion causing hit before they are given treatment and rest.

But then again, the NFL has already determined that concussions are not a problem in football, so they'd probably never go for this.
