View Full Version : headbadge fetish?

XXtwindad
11-28-2018, 01:24 PM
I got one. After admiring Rheosibal's IF (love it!) I'm reminded of other headbadges I admire: Breadwinner, Carl Strong, and Alliance (I like the brass version)

Aesthetically, it might actually be the starting point for me, as odd as that may seem.

Others?

I like some of the vintage headbages too, though many of the modern ones are stunning. When I was living in Europe I took photos of dozens of head tube badges from brands I'd never heard of before, or that I hadn't known made bikes once upon a time (like the Husqvarna badge). The high-end models of those pre-WWII bikes often had fender ornaments, like car hod ornaments -- those are cool too.

I had a girlfriend that bought one back in 1990 and it was just incredible. Amazing bikes they were and I really wish I had bought and kept one.

Bikes....so many bikes.:)

I t was much like this only a 12" frame but full Campy!

I love the Ibis headbadge (not my bike in the pic):

I can't believe it took 4 pages to get to an IBIS Headbadge. My all time favorite. I thought it was so cool I bought one and use it as a tie pin for special occasions. I use earring studs to adhere it to my tie. When IBIS went defunct the first go around the Bow-Tie was up for sale on eBay. I should have bought it there were only a couple made.

I have always loved the ANT headbadge--for the actual ant, but also the way he finished it. When I started getting into bikes, I would pore over pictures on Fixed Gear Gallery and I think that's the first place I saw an ANT. I also saw a huge ANT CX bike at the first CX race I went to. He built some great stuff. Mike Flanigan's story seems to be at the root of a lot of New England frame building.

Here's a 2012 write up on his headbadges from Lovely Bicycle:
http://lovelybike.blogspot.com/2012/02/ant-headbadge-in-making.html

I think he was welding for Seven most recently, but stopped and I don't know if he's building for sale anymore. Hard to tell on his blog, but I could be missing it.

Besides Jen Green, are there other custom head badge makers who might be able to construct a badge similar to the one below? I would like to have a new head badge that would fit on my carbon bike that has some curvature in the head tube and needs a badge that can be attached with epoxy or similar. I have contacted Jen about the project and she has not replied to a couple emails so she is either too busy or traveling or something, so I am looking for other options in case she is not interested. The only other option I know of are the folks at Velocolor.

I only have two headbadges that are not fastened to a bike, one is a Schwinn badge I took off a Traveller I disposed of; and the other is not really a badge for a bike but it was modeled exactly after a Lynskey badge, the only difference is the separate badge is not curved like the one designed to go on the head tube. Lynskey sent me that badge free upon request so I could mount it to a piece of cherry wood that I use as a paper weight.

I have a couple of bikes with decal headbadges which I really don't like because it looks cheap as if the company is saying they don't really care about their brand, I think the companies should all use some sort of badge...but I'm weird what can I say.

I can understand decal badges on Wal-Mart bikes but assuming your brand is marketed to adults...at least paint on your brand name. Bottom line; all comes down to profit.

The logo is lovely even as a sticker, I think they can also etch it into titanium, but the headbadges are beautiful.

Jen Green is almost finished with my head badge for a road bike project.

I asked her for a design that had cat-tails and evoked a calm, relaxed, midwestern lake feel. I didn’t want to be overly prescriptive, as she clearly knows what she's doing. The foreground is bronze, which will match the paint scheme very well. The background is copper with a darkened patina that she created. I think that it will look really handsome as it continues aging. She absolutely nailed what I was looking for. It is just awaiting some script at the bottom there.

This will live on a late 90's Basso Gap. I carted one around for 10 years because I loved how smooth and planted it felt. I also enjoyed that it combined lugs, fillet brazing, and a sleeved fork that reminds me of a Potts Type 2. Unfortunately. it was one size too small. GBCoupe offered one up in my size, so it will get a repaint and this headbadge.
