i can understand the marketing logic but is anyone really going to pay to watch so one can win 9 million dollars?

I have not seen details, but I hope this match is for charity.

No. Have zero interest in two already overpaid golfers playing 18 holes against each other for $9 million. My guess is that they've already decided to split the $9mil in a prematch arrangement. If they had any balls, they'd each put up $4.5mil and winner take all.

I like the idea, and wouldn't mind seeing more of this 1 vs. 1 format. Don't care for the payout. Should go 50% to charity, but don't mind them getting paid for their work.

Would be fun to see 2 up races on alpe d'huez, ventoux and tourmalet, etc.

let's face it, in some sports (cycling is debatable) the star power now rests with the athletes. they have the pull to do stuff like this.

Let's see a lebron vs. durant 1 v 1 competition.

yes i think in the interview they said that a portion of the money will go to charity. i still don't get it though! pay per view and online betting as they play.

I like golf and have zero interest. Two rich guys playing for......nothing (well, money). There's nothing at stake, and they are not even the game's top golfers any more.

Maybe it will improve their Ryder Cup play - both have mediocre records in that competition's match play (Tiger 4W-2L-2H, Phil 8-6-1).

this is a thing? people pay to watch grass grow? do the commentators at least get more excited on PPV or do they still whisper?

Is this for real? It's almost as bad at watching gamers play a video game. I just don't get it, or pro Golf for that matter.

but, I've got to sweep the driveway and clean my toenails that day.

sad.

Golf is what I watch when I'm taking a nap after a long weekend ride....

If the winner could pick the charity of their choice for the entirety of the winnings this thing would be ratings gold and would win a lot of fans.

I actually like golf and don't begrudge them their earnings. But the hubris of this contest is unbecoming of their stature in the game.

by the way this is the link for their interview promoting the match:

oh and it is funny that none of my avid golfer friends are planning to pay to watch!

:) I actually have to sweep my toenails and clean my driveway....neat how we are all different.

Yea, the time spent watching this would be hours that a person could never get back.

Don't care for anything golf.

Its a joke when I see TV ads for upcoming events and the only physical action shots they show are golfers doing fists pumps or yelling or grimacing after sinking a putt

I’m both a golfer and a fan of Woods (the golfer). I’d watch if it were free. Wouldn’t pay a cent and thus not watching.

Golf was hugely exciting in Tiger's prime, and recently now that he's made something of a comeback.

I love hearing athletes mic'ed up so I would be interested in watching this but don't have the time to sit down and watch 4+ hours worth of TV.

I love watching golf but hate Tiger. I'm definitely not giving him my money, but I am cheap and never do pay per view anyway.

So...

We have the millionaire, insider trader vs. a guy known for picking up his 40 something, Denny's hostesses and then getting beaten by a golf club by his wife?

Sounds like a movie plot

Most people who achieve extraordinary feats are flawed humans. Just like the rest of us!

Like I said, if this were more for charity rather than lining of personal pockets it would probably get way more, and more positive, attention.

You're right, I should take it easy on millionaires, they get a bad rap. I'll try to be less judgmental of them in the future

The irony is that there was a tech glitch that prevented taking payments so the whole thing was aired with no charge to viewers. Had I know in time I MIGHT have watched it to hear the gay repartee. :)

based on what i read this morning about the match the only money going to charity was the proceeds of the side bets. that was like $400k. still a lot of money but not anything like $9million.
