I am about to (slowly) begin the process of finding "era-correct" parts for my 1985 J.P. Weigle MTB project.

While I like the idea of building with a complete gruppo, since this was a custom/boutique build, I want to take some liberties and mix and match parts, just as someone "back in the day" might have done when custom ordering a frame and building it up to his or her liking with favorite/preferred/hot/new/trusted components.

While a full XC group is of course cool...and was perhaps a "Go To" build kit for production bikes of the era, I'd like to use some "funky" stuff, which reflects the earlier days of mountain bike experimentation/production and also sprinkle in some cool American boutique parts that were available at the time.

The frameset (and Bullmoose bars) are painted in a MOPAR muscle car color called "Panther Pink". It screams mid-80s, so I want to take this aesthetic and run with it.

Original paint is BEAT. The bike is covered in chips and nicks and scratches. I plan to build it with used but well cared for parts, not NOS pieces of jewelry.
This is meant to be a "survivor" build that I intend to get dusty and dirty. Not looking for anything precious, just stuff that reflects the era, honors it's history, works well, etc. No plans to repaint at this time.

For the derailleurs, I am eyeing either Shimano XT "Deer Head" or SunTour XC.
Anyone out there have a strong preference for one over the other? If so, why?

Rear brake is an under chainstay mounted XC Cunningham roller cam.
Find another matching front? Or was there a go-to canti that I should consider?
Levers: Maguras? Big moto-style Dia Comps? Match the XC brakes?

Seatpost is a 27.0
I like the idea of an American Classic here, as it's a good place to sprinkle in the smaller American brands. Otherwise, I'll match the drivetrain.

Cranks. I figure I will find something to match which derailleur I go with. Though I did read that Cook Bros "Dog Bones" first appeared in 85. If I stumbled upon a set that wasn't $$$, that'd be cool. Triple or double?

Pedals will be classic XC bear traps.

Turbo or Avocet Touring saddle.

Wheelset is keeping me up at night...
Hubs: I would love to do era Phils here. Nutted? QR?
Rims: What were my options? Would current production Araya 7X be absolute blasphemy? If I want vintage, what other models were popular in 85?

Tires:
Since this will likely see mixed terrain and the occasional fire road, I don't need anything wildly knobby. So...Snake Bellys?

Any thoughts? Ideas? Considerations?

Below is my '83 Stumpy with all original parts but the saddle and pedals. There are a ton of site out there which chronicle MTB parts...here's a link from MOMBAT.

They were a few different models, here's an XC - http://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/SunTour_XC_derailleur_3_pulley_system.html

Cranks - Bullseye made some really cool welded steel cranks....they're probably hard to find these days though. Whatever you get, definitely a triple.

Hubs - Bullseye again. IMO they are the best rolling hubs I've ever owned. American Classic would be another good choice.

Pics please of the frame. I love old MTBs.

In my mind for a bike of this era, that is going to be ridden but you want to keep "period" correct, I'd go up to 1990 for parts. Opens up options and won't change the aesthetic that much.

For brakes, depending on mounts for the fork, shimano cantilevers of that era can't be beat. For rear, if you get luck, a WTB roller cam would be cool, but $$$$$$$.

Cranks - a TA specialties from that era would not look out of place on it, and definitely a triple.

Brake levers, while the motos are cool, they are heavy and depending on your hands may not be that good in terms of cable pull/modulation.

For rim, I'd say the arayas are fine in terms of looks. I'd probably upgrade to something slightly more modern to save on weight, maybe a set of rhino lites to save a bit of weight.

Not sure if these were around in '85, but I stumbled upon this 27.0 American Classic Ti post on ebay last night: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Titanium-Seatpost-American-Classic-27mm-350Mm-Vintage-Road-MTB-Bicycle-/311666452977

Also, would love to see pics of this frame, so post some!

I think '85 was kind of an inflection point between cobbled together ATBs and the modernization of the MTB. You could probably go with TA cranks or a Suntour or Shimano triple. Campy Rally long cage rd or Deerhead/XC. Its maybe the best era for freedom to build it how you'd like to and to be as precious or not about the condition of the parts. There's plenty of stuff left from that time that's still kicking it or wrapped up tight in original packaging. I think this is gonna be a cool build either way!

Here's some more vintage MTB data for you from my bike library...at least from Specialized's POV.

Judging by the 1985 Cannondale catalog, SunTour XC was the premier group at the time followed by Shimano XT. The SunTour bike retailed for $100 more than the XT.

I will have to look around but I may have at least one Bullseye hub. Also have some NOS rims from the general era. Pretty sure they are Specialized branded. Have some NOS Campagnolo MTB rims but I think they are 1990 or newer.

The pink frame, am I the only one puzzled by the seat post/brake cable interface?

Internal brake cable through the top tube...common detail by Peter who is a pretty uncommon builder and artisan as we all know, but that seat post extension has to work like a topper, yes? Check his Flickr page out sometime as he chronicles a lot of his unique work.
