Hello PL folks, wondering if you could help ID this Colnago. It looks like a C40 but doesn't say 'C40' anywhere. I had a later gen. HP B-Stay C40 and this one rides even better. Maybe it's the steel fork. Amazing bike whatever it is!

It's a very early C40 as far as I can tell. My guess is that if you remove the World Champ sticker on the seat tube you'll see "C40" as that's typically where they had that marking.

Nice looking Colnago. You can send the serial number (should be on the right rear dropout) to laura @ colnago and she might be able to give you some background on the frame.....

Definitely an early C40. Beautiful! Very cool that it still has the Presica fork on it.

I think you’re right. Looks like part of the C and the zero peeking out from underneath. Has the same square profile rear brake bridge as my early C40

That looks definitely like a C40 - MkI.

C40 - MkI = thin, round section seatstays and chainstays; round section down tube; longish carbon lugs; shifter bosses on the down tube.

(C40 - MkII = slightly larger seatstays and chainstays; more ovalized chainstays; flared down tube at bb; shifter bosses on the head tube/down tube lug. Clearly not a MkIII or MkIV.)

Beautiful bicycle.

definitely a C40-mk1...constant-diameter DT, DT shifter-bosses, round-profile chainstays...

ser# on early C40s is located on the front-mech "braze-on" mount.

It reads Campione del Mundo Lugano 1996 because Johan Museeuw was on a C40 when he won:

Thanks for the correction! Serial numbers seem to move around a bit on Colnagos... if only I could find one on my Master CX! Seems Ernesto didn't put them on one-offs!

Just taking a second look and I think your top tube has the “cycling man” graphic rather than the clover logo. From what I’ve found this wasn’t used until ‘97 or ‘98. Not sure how that fits in with the Mark I features.
