View Full Version : Any "better" steerer extenders out there?

I'm selling a 56cm Trek Domane Segefredo bike with a cut steerer, and had to use a cheap and heavy steerer extender to allow someone to test ride the bike with a standard stem.
The test-ride went well but I suspect that the look of the steerer extender may be holding the buyer back from closing the deal, even though they enthusiastically said that the substantial amount of money would simply have to wait for a couple of weeks.

Not trying to pass any such problem off to a buyer, I am hoping that there might be a more svelte version of these things that won't look so out of place on a modern, high-end road bike.

This isn't the "H2 fit" version with the taller headtube. And the buyer has a carbon Bontrager stem of the correct reach that would work well if I could just raise it a couple of inches.

I couldn't ride this bike for long for the same reason, though it is a very nice bike I have to say, so perhaps a riser stem of some sort (with 9cm of actual forward reach) might be better for this buyer.

Anyone else found an "elegant" solution to this problem?

The best period, dependent on your fork steerer tube size https://bbbcycling.com/en_en/bhp-20-extender or https://bbbcycling.com/en_en/bhp-21-extender

The best period...

Can you even use an internal expander on a carbon steerer?

I didn't think that was safe.

To dddd: If you need to raise it "a couple of inches" then the fit is wrong for the buyer. Find the correct buyer.

You could have a custom steel stem made, but weight weenies will moan and the amount of rise will just look bad.

Maybe try to get a new fork.
Look on ebay.

A couple of inches is a lot of movement. Not sure of Trek's recommendations, but there are a number of companies that say 30mm between stem and upper race is the reasonable safe limit.

IMO, any bike that needs that much front end height to make it work isn't the right geo for the rider.

The elegant solution is the buyer find a bike that fits, but that doesn't solve your issue of selling the bike.

Thanks all.

This mirrors my own fit problems due to my proportional excess of leg length.

On a recent Argon18 purchase, the bike's maker thoughtfully included the option to literally extend the upper-to-lower headset spacing using a threaded extender, which really saved the day for me using that bike!
But this Trek, if anything, has perhaps an even shorter headtube than the Argon18 without it's extender in place.

I'm actually selling the entire bike with SRAM Red22 and without wheels for $1700, so acquiring a longer fork would have to greatly increase my selling price. Perhaps I should try listing it in the classifieds(?). The steerer is still about a half-inch longer than needed for stem clamping, but the prospective buyer is long-legged like myself.

a couple of inches is 5cm. That tells me you need to find a new buyer or get that height back via +17d stem in combination with a riser style handlebar (FSA K-wing, Specialized hover (15mm gain)).

depending on the buyer, they may not care about the "look" the way people here do. I see plenty of folks riding around sitting straight up and having a great time.

There is this...

But then there's also the issue that this particular frame, if it's a 2016-2018 Domane SLR RSL, has ridonkulously short trail. Jacking up and shortening the control point on this bike is going to make it hard to ride in a straight line.

You need to find a new buyer. This bike was made with a very short headtube and is designed for limber and tall Classics riders.

It says in the link...

Appreciate this nuanced insight

Where can you get one?

Any place that works with QBP in your local area should be able to get them for you.
