View Full Version : Looking for a big tire drop bar winter/rough stuff bike

I am thinking about getting a new bicycle for winter and mountain duties. I have some tough to fill requirements but the market is starting to be filled with a lot of things like this. I am sure I have missed some options so please enlighten me. The major requirements I have are-

fat tires with fenders (26"x2" or 650bx47mm or bigger)
drop bar geometry
disc or canti
Steel frame and steel fork

basically I want to have a sort of big tire rando bike.

So far I have been considering

1. Crust evasion- a little overbuilt, too much clearance.
2. Crust Bombora- Almost right, BB too high.
3. Crust Romanceür- Just about right, it has DT shifter mounts!!!!!
4. Sim works doppo- pretty close in 650b mode, worried about getting hit with customs charges.
5. All City gorilla monsoon- close but BB too high.
6. Specialized AWOL- a 650b converted AWOL is close but Spec has been a bit rude to small companies so I am not sure about riding one again.

Did I miss anything? What do you guys think?

Decent list here, with a few steel options:

Also this was asked not too long ago:

Not sure how many of the options in that thread have your "wants" fulfilled. Int that case, the following might:

Norco Search XR Steel looks like a good bet
Bombtrack Hook EXT

I'd echo Nick's idea. Look for a NORBA-era early 90's racing mountain bike frame and convert it.

I like everything about the Crust Romanceür. It's got all the sensibility of Grant Petersen's ideas, and current tech. It's very stylish. Don't know anything about the builder, but it looks really well done. And it will look amazing in a larger frame size.

$1,275 USD - It's a little pricey, but we're not debating value...

Convert an old 26er mtb. If you end up really liking it and riding it a lot, then get a crust romanceur.

Recommend to check out the Raleigh Stuntman (and PM me if you want a lightly used 56 :) ). It's a fun bike with clearance for 29x2.1, steel frame, dropper post and Sram 1x hydro group.

I've used it for mountain bike rides, work commuting, bike packing, and road cruising. Raleigh has pretty generous corporate pricing which, as I understand, just involves emailing them to ask for.

I ride one year-round as a single-speeder, could easily convert it to 1x or even 2x with eTAP.

26x2.00 easily with road cranks (and clearance for two 'rings if desired). Geometry is MTB-ish in front, road in back. I keep it at my day job and ride the trails and service roads at lunch.

There's also a thread on iBob about the Rawland xSogn being $1200 from Walmart.com (no, seriously). I don't think they have our size, tho.

If I don't buy this: https://www.rencycles.com/deals/ren-waypoint-61cm-ultegra-2x10-gravel-demo-bike

I could help facilitate...

I want to get in on the OMTM situation happening in these parts: http://www.omtm.cc/

Need a bit more tire than my Kirk can fit, unfortunately.

The old lugged Trek 900 series frames are great for this purpose. This one is rolling on 650b Pacenti rims laced to Nukeproof hubs both purchased from PLers.
Bicycletricycle, the rims may look familiar to you!

I got an AWOL frame from a jr59. I’m excited about building it up. Looks like it fits up to 27.5 x 2.25, should be fun.

I really want A 333 land sea air.......

Thanks for all the ideas guys.

Gentleman selling it is a straight shooter and legitimate. I'd be happy to help facilitate. Almost bought it myself, but I think I need something in between this and a cross bike in order to keep some distance out to my HT 29er. Looks like a really great rough-stuff bikepacker and mild singletrack bike. And I believe is designed around drop-bars.

I've been riding the Rove NRB for close to a year and it's a nice bike, alum frame carb fork with Ultegra (mostly) hydraulic disc. I looked at the Surly prior however the better fork/hydraulic brakes won out. 650x48 gravelking tubeless! Rides like you're sitting on a pillow.

If I haven't said it already, I like that bike. :)

Tickled pink you listed not just one, but two of my former urban assault beasts. Both were inspired by the Amaro Lollobrigida (http://fixedgeargallery.com/2008/feb/3/Amaro-1.jpg) which I think is the coolest bike ever built.

Dang, that's a pretty enticing way to try such a bike - plus the Large looks like it'd fit this kid pretty perfectly.. Not a great spec on the parts, but serviceable.

Extra 4% back if going through ActiveJunky too.

My mind also went to Amaro. (https://www.flickr.com/photos/amarobikes/34717064432/in/album-72157674187340278/) There are lots of options for fat tire drop bar bikes, but Aimar has a certain style.

Well, I found a good deal on a demo Felt Breed 30 that has been upgraded to RX8000 shifters, brakes, and der's. I like that the Breed 30 has the Praxis sub-compact 2x instead of the 1x Force 1 on the Breed 20. 32x34 as a low gear sounds perfect for a heavier bike with fat tires. And I'll be using my own bars/post/stem/saddle anyway, so no sense in paying for up-level versions of those. Another adventure in trying out a totally new-to-me bike style - and as usual, with little downside risk since I picked it up after it'd already taken a little depreciation.. And I now have a bike to do a deep-woods gravel century in December in Olympia. What could go wrong?
