Yesterday's ride took me along many miles of the paved trails we've got around here. These are mostly cycling trails, a few runners but most of them had just jumped off a bike.

Anyway a lot of guys wearing bandannas. Not just the tri guys, but a couple of them had 'em too.

So, what's up with that?

Since you don't have your location listed, care to share where you saw these bandana clad folks at?

Like the spud showed, bandannas! We don' need no steenking badges bandannas.

So, okay, OP, what're those for?

I was riding the Suncoast Trail and Starkey park, north of Tampa.

And yeah, nearly a dozen guys riding around with rags wrapped around their faces. I don't pass many people and not too many pass me so no opportunity to ask about it. It's not cold down here or anything. No forest fires or nothin'.

Was it Wednesday? Worst day to ride behind others that partake in Taco Tuesday!

Marco Pantani fan club meets at that very spot this time every year.

Got that one. And this one: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2194/5867/products/ColoradFlagBlueWhite_360x.jpg?v=1505392011 And one with the Norwegian flag. Love them for cycling and nordic skiing.

No thanks on bandanas -- they don't work on my fat head.

I just ordered a Pandana to help strain out the bugs on the Platte River Trail during my commute. I'll get a little less protein during the day, but I'm a little tired of spitting out bugs.

I'm also hoping it will take the edge of on cool days that are too warm for my balaclava but a bit cool for my naked face.

We might be talking about the same thing with different applications (but I might be wrong).

I'm a bald roadie, not by choice. I wear a variety of poly-cloth material as a neck gator in the cold months (1/2 of the year here in the Boston area).

I also learned that those same gators can be used in a myriad ways, and I wear them as a winter hat. You turn it inside out, fold it longitudinally so it's a 2x layer, and use it under the helmet as winter hat. Some folks use it without a helmet, for running, or doing exercises outdoors in the cold. It's stylish, convenient, and comes in a multitude of designs.

is this what you're referring to?

If it was a couple of weeks ago, maybe to screen out the Lovebugs? If recently, I dunno, there is a lot of pollen in the air right now....

No, not a Pantani kinda do-rag.

I'm talking a Frito Bandito bandanna rag wrapped around the lower half of the face.
