View Full Version : Rims and large tires?

I'm playing around w/ 35 mm tires on my trusty Archetype rims. That being said, trying to see what the "accepted" gravel setup is these days - is this "bad" to do (23 mm rim on 35 mm tire) vs. looking at a gigantic 35 mm rim for a 35 mm tire?

Archetypes have been great for me with tires anywhere from 23c to 43c.

Isn't the internal width around 19mm on those rims? I think a 35-38mm tire is totally fine with that width.

My personal rule of thumb is never go more than double the internal diameter. But never, ever, go smaller than the internal diameter.

I believe you should start watching out for the balloon shape that the tire will start to make if you squeeze on large tires on narrower rims. Won't handle as well and you might roll a tire.

This was what we were told when wider tires for road bikes were "introduced", and that was the basis for selling us new wider rims. And tires have continued to get wider still, and some people say, no problem, put a 2.3" mountain bike tire on a TB14, and others say "Hot water burn baby! Hot water burn baby! It's the Dreaded Light-Bulb Shape!"

I think this is another six answers from five experts. I've quit trying to figure it out. My only data point is, I've ridden 38C Shikoro tires on Dyads, and they didn't explode... but they were funny-lookin' enough that I took 'em off. If I get around to it I'll rebuild those wheels with Rhyno-Lites.

Good question.... I'm also curious to know. But I think 35mm tires are fine, and would just be a matter of personal preference.

yeah, it's fine.. BITD and until now, the only tire I ever rolled was a 2.5" at 30psi on a 17mm rim, 2.1s worked fine with 30psi on the same set up. HED also says to ride 23s on 25mm rims so I think the opposite won't explode either..

Good rule. But when a new study somes out that says 20mm tires are fastest I'll need three sets of new rims.

Narrower rims than ideal, but these Rat Traps have not given me any problems on the old Mavic 517s they’re mounted on. I believe the internal width is 19mm and the tires are around 2.0” (50mm).

I've done enough off-roading on this hybrid-turned-29er to know that 2.1" tires on i13mm width rims works well at 25psi while running tubes.

I wasn't quite sure that the tires would even fit into the frame and fork, but fit they did. For reference I weigh 145lbs and 25psi is no problem.

I raced on 700x45c tires in the 90's, mounted on i13mm MA40 rims, and again had no problems. I ran higher pressure in those because of the rocks out on the mtb courses that I passed over at my most out-of-control speeds.

I ran 35mm Continental Cyclocross Speed (?) on Velocity Deep V's (14mm internal) in a bunch of gravel races. With tubes. I've got a set of wheels with DT 511's that are 21mm internal set up tubeless. I'd run 40's on those.
