View Full Version : Quill stem vs adapter??

For those with bikes that have older style threaded forks/headsets....do you go with a quill stem, or a quill adapter and modern stem??

Quill is the right answer for simplicity and appearance. A TIG steel quill stem adds plenty of stiffness over a lightweight aluminum quill, if that is a concern.

Thanks, not concerned about stiffness. I guess using the adapter obviously opens up a lot more selection of stems and bars to use. Wasn't sure what most folks were doing...

Quill, but some adapters can make things look quite good up front with the right thread less stem.

I'll be dealing with this on some projects. What I'm thinking for myself is that if it can be done with 30mm of spacers, I'll probably go with an adapter, but go with a quill stem if more space is required to get the right fit since I don't like the aesthetics of more spacers. The big issue I see is that if you go with a quill stem, you are pretty much limited to 26.0 bars or 26.4 Cinellis, since I don't feel quite ready to order a custom stem. If you use a 90mm stem, you can get it for 31.8 bars from Factory Five.

Quill is the way to go, i have used adapters and are ok, all depends of the brand but my personal issue is that the bikes looks goofy with the adapter and the 1 1/8 stem and even if you put a 1 inch threadless stem, the looks is just not right.

I have done both. It just depends. Do I want to use a particular OS handlebar? If yes, that would necessitate using a thread less stem, and that means going with an adapter.

Case in point:
http://alicehui.com/bike/RS/IMG_8761.jpg

But personally, I like the look of quill on a classic steel frame.

I missed my pal fuzzalow, so I am gonna steal one of his photos:

Another factor in using quill is the ease of raising the height of the handlebar, esp. with a longer neck stem like Nitto Technomic.

Just browsing online, and as someone else mentioned, not many 26.0mm handlebars out there??
If I go with a quill stem, would likely be a Deda Murex, so 26.0...

Ah, never mind, searched '26.0 handlebar' in google, got a decent amount of hits... :)

On steel frames with 1" threaded steerers, quill looks the best, full stop.

But there is an adapter with a treadless stem on the bike that's on my trainer, because of my pretty big hands and preferring not to wear gloves on the trainer. There's a limited selection of quill stems in -17º for large diameter or aero shaped bars. I could use puffy bar tape, but the aesthetics don't appeal to me.

Plus, I'm sure tons of members of this forum have some in their parts bin. Put out a WTB ad!

I’m in the same boat as you once I switch out my fork and am considering one of these. https://velo-orange.com/collections/stems/products/quill-stem-with-removable-faceplate-31-8mm

Nice with the removable face plate, but I think I like the smooth front look of the deda stems. Personal pref. :)

Soma HWY 1 is the ticket for a modern, compact bar with a 26.0 clamp diameter. Shallow drop, and works great with modern levers.

Quill stem 100%.
Anything else is just horrible on the eyes.

I’m sure you’ve already come across this: The Soma Hwy 1, Origin 8, and new Nitto 26.0 compact offerings are all superb, can find silver or black amongst these.

For modern 31.8 handlebars to a quill - have you seen the Caletti VTM?

Since we are neighbors I might have some stems and/or quills you can try. I have a silver adapter that I never used as well.

I'll throw in a plug for the Factory five Titan. Anyone actually tried these?

I got one of these for my dad to use and it's really quite lovely in silver. lots of extra height and good price, feels solid. The matching HWY 1 bars are nice and compact. http://www.somafab.com/archives/product/sutro-quill-stem

kind of ugly but I would bite if they made it in 100 or 110.

I say quill always, quill stems are beautiful, adapters are not, why not use the quill?

If the bike is a keeper and you want a no-compromise solution, consider a custom quill stem from builders like Eric Estlund (Winter Cycles). Quill for 31.8 bars is no problem for him.

Not cheap, but puts the cherry on top of a special build.

I can attest this is probably the ideal option, if cost is no object.

Limited sizes also. Many riders need stems 120mm or longer.

I've said this before, but I would have Paul at Rock Lobster, or TiCycles make a quill 31.8. I need a open face stem because I use Enve or FSA wing bars on all my bikes.

I have two bikes with quill adapters. I hate how quill adapters look, but both those bikes have the stem slammed so you can't see the adapter

I just had to make this decision. I went quill so the aesthetic matches. On some frames/stems it works fine with an adapter and isn't that noticeable. I just don't like a stem that looks big compared to the frame tubes.

quill.

the other option is fugly.
