View Full Version : Has Serotta/Paceline Forum been an influence in your cycling experience?

I have learned and experienced more in the last 10 years than I had in the preceding 50 years because of Serotta/Paceline.
I'm pretty much of a loner in my cycling though I've been passionate about cycling for the last 35 years (though bikes have been a part of my life much earlier than that).
I most likely would not have owned and experienced the joys of riding a Serotta(s), Merlin(s), Seven, Moots, etc or riding "fat tires" ( anything over 25c on the road) :).
I have met, read and followed countless forum members (too many to name but most of you know who they be) that have influenced my thinking and made my cycling adventures ever more pleasurable. Thanks to you all!

This place is special. So much to learn and so many to learn from. Bob, I have to thank you again for putting me on to this great place by the way, all the way back from our days at the old Velonews forums.

Holy crap yes, from its first iteration way back when.

Absolutely. Learned a ton from this place. Bought and sold stuff. Love it here. Why I keep coming back daily! Been here for years, best forum on the net. Period.

no question. Back in the Kahuna days, information was hard to come by and this community was a fabulous resource. Now, I am way out of the loop and less ingrained in what is going on, but this site is now a way for me to know some of what is happening.

It's also great for getting different perspectives on cycling (and non-cycling)-related themes from outside the usual bubble I live in. I love getting to see pictures of other people's rides and bikes, as that's a great way to live vicariously.

If it weren't for here (though maybe it was across the hall), I wouldn't know that the bike I really want is a Nagasawa Road bike drilled for electronic solely for the reason that you can't get one.

Also, it's great to see other people have the same addiction I do.

Without a doubt! From equipment and kit selection, to ride suggestions, and bike maintenance guidance the forum has been indispensable. The friendships created here have just been the icing on the cake!

And that's just from the cycling aspect of the forum...

Been here for a long time.

I have learned much about many things, not just bicycle-related. The quality and breadth of knowledge is stunning.
Most importantly, I have learned what a well-run web-based community can be like, warts and all.
I have also learned that there are a goodly number of well-meaning, enabling SOBs who allow me to feed my addiction and rationalize it all at once.

Chapeau Paceline!

Absolutely. It's become an indispensable part of my day. I contribute less than I absorb, because so many of you folks have deep experience and lots of wisdom, whether it's on or off topic.

The combined talent here could bring world peace, cure hunger, stop global warming, and conclusively solve the Campy/Shimano enigma.

Well I agree with most of this statement; the campy/shimano problem may be beyond our collective ability to resolve. The others would be easy by comparison. ;)

Absolutely one of the best things I like about cycling is Paceline for all of the reasons already listed. Thanks to jtakeda for buying my Eisentraut back in 2012 and alerting me to this special place.

This community is responsible for getting me not only back on the bike but WANTING to be on the bike!

I had been away from the sport/passion for something like 12-15 years. I started checking out the board maybe 8-10 years ago. That lead to rekindled interest and desire to be back on the horse.

Everything since then has been gravy :) KUDOS to everyone on this crazy ride together!

I've met a lot of neat people on-line here and IN PERSON. I have loaned bikes to members and borrowed bikes from members. I haven't been very active in the classifieds but I have had some very nice transactions there.

Absolutely, yes.

This is fantastic place, and has surely played a pivotal role in shaping my philosophy of cycling, and probably other subjects as well.

This site has been immeasurable in improving my quality of life on a bicycle.
I have sold and bought a tremendous amount of stuff here, and I have been able to learn so much!!! Great informative community on bicycling. Thank you brothers and sisters. I love you all. There are wickedly funny and smart people here.

Paceline has been very, very good to me.

Not kidding--bought and sold some stuff, met a few peeps in person, but most of all I like the range of opinions here--retro geeks through to 'latest and greatest'. Keeps this old fogy more up to date than if I was just left to my own devices.

And there is lots more to like--the (informal) Campy tech support from Old Spud, a fairly light hand by the moderators and a great breadth of general knowledge of things other than bikes.

I've been around since the end of the Kahuna days. The knowledge I've gained here about not only bikes but so many other topics has improved my day-to-day life. The breadth of experience and information here is fantastic.
I've met a few members in person and to a man (or woman), everyone has been just good people.

Pretty cool place in my mind.

Paceline has an interesting diversity. In my cycling universe, I've never met a Paceline member although I frequently chat with riders on Serottas. Unlike Weight Weenies and even some fixed gear forums, this site's presence seems to be limited in my region. But I'm convinced the influence is huge, it just gets filtered through the Radavist. The kid wearing the cleanest, latest kit riding a Mosaic with gumwalls has no idea that if it were not for Paceline he'd be on a Cervelo.

I too have been here a long time, and while not as knowledgeable about the technical aspects of the sport as many on here, my love of nice bikes is a common theme.

Influences me. I first came to the serotta forum to help get ideas on how to build a serotta frame that I bought off ebay (already had an nhx that I bought new years ago). Learned a lot from the members about bikes. Loved the stories and experiences. Nowadays, I check in daily. I contribute when I (believe) have something to offer, but I receive way more from the paceline members than I give. Thanks all.

In the days of Douglas Brooks I learned a lot and have been at it for at least 15 years. About 55 bikes later, i have finally settled in pretty well. Good buds too. Finally met that Dave Thompson after many years and wonder about Louis in St. Louis. Maybe the pigment in my imagination?

Oh yeah, go A's.

Yes! I can take comfort in knowing that I am not nearly the geekiest, most ocd bike lover out there

All kidding aside...this is a wonderful forum that has enhanced my cycling and internet enjoyment. Thanks to all the great peeps who keep the lights on and those who contribute to the discussions.

Came for the classified and stayed for the warm fuzzies :)

For sure. The info, the community, the bickering, the bike porn, the classifieds... all of it.

Definitely wouldn't have commissioned any custom frames (or wheels for that matter) if not for this place.

Serotta/paceline and sheldon brown have taught me much.

Quick quip above aside, I really do have quite an appreciation for this place and the influence it has had over my cycling experience is strong..

Paceline has provided me a community of like-minded crazies. I consider many/most of you to be friends in the truest sense - people who enrich my life and who I wish the best for.. I hope I get to meet more of you in person over the years to come. And I hope this place continues to grow and thrive.

Many thanks to the mods, and to the old wise ones who've kept this going and welcomed us newcomers over the years. I raise a glass smudged with greasy prints and smelling of Phil's green stuff in your general direction

This place is special. So much to learn and so many to learn from. Bob, I have to thank you again for putting me on to this great place by the way, all the way back from our days at the old Velonews forums.

The Goatroper days eh?

This place has influenced my cycling experience by letting me get a taste of almost all the bikes I've ever wanted, only to realize that I pretty much already had the one I wanted most.

I came here for N+1 and the bike porn thanks to Bobswire...stayed for the conversations.

Fun place to come, VERY diverse. Learned stuff I didn't know..Mods do a great job. Even fun to argue with some, still haven't seen the need to block anybody(-'pal')..:). It's about toys, after all.

ALSO, PL has been good to me for my little garage wheel building gig..4 years, about 500 wheels..thanks to all. :)

Paceline has definitely influenced me. Tons of knowledge here, and people are always willing to help out with my questions, which have mostly been about injuries lately.

But I come here for interesting info. I come here for motivation. The discussions help me with ideas and I learn a lot, which keeps my own opinions in a constant state of evolution.

I now own a Serotta. It needed repairs, which are now done, and it is awaiting paint. I’m going to hang an 11 speed Campy group on it, almost all of it sourced from these classifieds. For this guy, any departure from silver 8 speed Shimano parts with downtube or bar-end shifters is a significant change.

Finally, Wabi Woolens has a lot of customers here. I am in constant appreciate of your support and continued patronage. Thank you for that.

Thanks mods, for the time and effort you put into this place.

Cheers.

I learned much from this forum that has made cycling more fun. I've made bike purchases based on info I learned from members of this forum, a Look 585, a Pegoretti, and a Hampsten. Its doubtful I'd have known about these bikes without this forum.

Well... I've wasted way too much time here.

And... probably wound up with a few more bikes than the CFO would prefer.

Good place with good people.

And I'd agree that the mods generally do a wonderful job herding cats.

Holy crap.. yeah. It's become the first place I check in the morning and the place I decompress after work. Literally sun rises and sets here :)

I learn a ton both bike and non bike related. Get to see gorgeous builds. Get to "meet" and learn from bike mechanics, frame builders and other bike geeks. Get to share in my addiction.

Like someone else went from carbon to steel and now titanium.

Would miss this place immensely. Thank you.

PS. Reminds me I should put in my annual tithe for the forum to help keep it running.
