View Full Version : Wheel build Disc Gravel Bike
Looking at building up a set using Easton 90sl or Hed Belgium rims. Can’t decide on hubs either
Chris King r45D or
DTSwiss 240 thinking straight pull Center Lock
Any feedback appreciated

I'd get the 240s - Stans Crest wheelset on the classifieds if that rim would handle the tires you want. 240s vs Chris King I'd go for King especially if you want a color. The 240s are nice but the 350s are just as good and a bit lighter. I way prefer White Industries though, killer hub with a titanium freehub body, more affordable than both too.

Centerlock Disc over 6 bolt if possible. 6 bolt only if you are thinking of putting these on a mountain bike because you can do boost adapters with a few hubs that you can't do with center lock disc.

I cracked R90 SL rims doing road rides. I'd be hesitant recommending them for gravel. Garro built me a set with WI XMR hubs and WTB KOM I23 rims. I also have a set of Boyd Altamonts that are CLD. Those are great wheels and CLD is slick, so easy to set up.
I don't know if you meant straight pull spokes, but disc brakes apply torque to the hub, cross those spokes.

I was researching on the same thing two weeks ago, had wanted to build a set of gravel wheels using some higher-end hubs and rims, maybe lighter. While mulling over, saw a set of 11-speed disc wheels on eBay that came with Chris King R45D rear and DT 350 front hubs, using H Plus Son Formation Face rims. Didn't know much about those rims nor care for them at first, but was interested in possibly harvesting those hubs to do my own build. Did a bit of research and was shocked to find out how much those CK R45D hub cost ($400+), did some quick maths, decided to go ahead and bid for them, ended up winning. Everything shipped to the house came up to $265. They are in really good condition, as in looks like they are new, unused. After trying them out on my gravel bike, I actually like the current build. Those H Plus Son Formation Face rims have a nice deep-dish-like profile and actually rides pretty nice and fast. Now I am not sure if I want to break them up and do a rebuild...oh well, I guess there's no hurry, I will ride them a bit longer before I decide. If I do decide to go ahead with a rebuild, I have some new Pacenti Forza rim set aside and that's probably what I will go with.

DT..CK are nice but way complicated for a 'bike hub', IMHO..might look at DT350 also.'essentially the same with some 'off shore' parts.

I have straight pull DT 240s on one wheelset, not sure of the advantages of straight pull but the hubs are good. Infact, I only use DT hubs nowadays as there's not anything else better IMO. Not the lightest, but very reliable. The 350s are also great. Definitely go for centrelock; gives you more options.

Was faced with the same question last year and ended up with DT350s and HED Belgium rims. Threw in a 36T star ratchet for good measure and couldn't be happier for the money.

I just did the same (hub) thing, straight pull 350s with an upgraded ratchet. Mine are road disc, so got Farsports carbon 45mm deep x 25mm wide wheels, x rays 24 spoke, very pleased...
