So on this new bike frame I got, no brakes on the rear clears a 28 no problems, there is at least 5mm from the brake bridge, maybe even more. However, when I put a caliper on there, its no good.

I have tried. 7700 DA, Non Skeleton Chorus and Potenzas. What brake has the most clearance? Any brand is fine but I would like to keep it cheap (no EEs on this please :))

Ideally would be a break where the bolt was as low as possible

All the new Shimano claim 28mm on regular reach frames...ask me how I know? ;-)

Interested in R8000 Ultegra?!!!

1st gen SRAM Red will take 28, and they are not so expensive anymore.

And similarly the 9100's do as well.

Ees have great clearance... Oh wait... You said no EEs.

Newer Shimano. Maybe TRP 870s if you can find a set?

R8000 sound good but trying to keep cheap on this build.

Just for clarification, are you looking for short reach? I have the Shimano BR-R650 and they have tons of room for 28s (the frame was built to accommodate 35s) but they're mid-reach brakes.

Short reach brakes :/


6800 I don’t think would clear 28s on this frame


@charliedid- just did some reading on r7000 and r8000 and seems like they have a ton of clearance. May have to pick up a pair of r7000

PM me what you find the R7000 for and I *might be willing to part with the Ultegra's. Not sure because who knows what I might do with that group in the future which means I may just hold on to them. Either way let me know...

I have a set of a Shimano 5800s that I ran on my last bike, they cleared 28s with plenty of room to spare.

The thing is, for example, the potenza brakes I already tried do clear a 28 on another bike I have, so do the chorus but just not on this one because of where the bridge is :/

The single pivot skeletons have pretty good clearance, for the rear...

I just am not a fan of single pivot and I think if I have to buy new brakes I rather match the shimano thats going to be on the bike. These R shimano brakes look the ticket, but man are they HEAVY.

The single pivots have plenty of stoping power. Also when you say heavy do you mean like a small mouth full of water heavier? ;)

surprising as the 6800s hang up on Conti 28s/zipps.. I thought the 105 and Ultegra were basically the same dimensions?

The single pivots have plenty of stoping power. Also when you say heavy do you mean like a small mouth full of water heavier? ;)

Its not about the power, I like that with dual pivots I can adjust the brake with my hand and not a tool.

Also, I don't care if they are heavy, the bike is steel with steel fork and 105 on it but they are heavy. 400g. campy potenza are 70g lighter and cost less.

I guess I am used to my 160g EE brakes :banana::)

hey hey, I really meant nothing by the heavy comment, just having fun with your not so serious comment about the heavy callipers. The problem with all the talk of callipers and what size tires they clear is they fact that different tires labeled the same size have vastly different profiles, and height of the brake bridge varies on different frames. In the end the only metric is trial and error and finding out which callipers give the most clearance compared to others on the same bike, thus establishing a hierarchy. In the campy world the new design skeletons (Potenza and un-labeled) have been great compared to the older design. Add a washer of a 3-5mm with a longer brake bolt and you can get a few more mm of tire clearance. I just wish that brake bridges were all installed a few mm higher!!! Such a PITA.
