View Full Version : Powertap G3 wheel creak
I have a crazy loud creaking that I've finally narrowed down to the wheel (switched it out, noise gone--should have done that earlier, except I was so sure it was coming from the crank/BB area). The wheel is a powertap G3 hub laced to DT rims, built by Wheelbuilder.com
I've already removed, cleaned, lubed, retightened the cassette, and that doesn't make one iota of difference. Short of sending the wheel back to the builder, what can I try myself?
Thanks!

Do the axles spin smoothly by hand, no rough feeling or looseness? Does the cassette body spin smoothly? What QR are you using? Are your dropouts chrome/horizontal/etc? Could be that the bearings are wearing out, could be the skewer isn't tightening properly. Could be something with the axle as well.

The axle does spin smoothly and has no play. Same with the cassette body. The QR is a DT Swiss non quick release, so it's good and tight. The only unusual thing I see is that the splines on the cassette body are a bit chewed up--small gouges where the inside edges of the cassette are digging into them. Could that be the issue? How does one remove a cassette body or replace it?
Just figured out that the freehub just pulls off. Couldn't be easier. I'll try greasing stuff inside and out, and see if that helps...

Wow this is a timely post...I have the same problem. Noticed it this morning after the ride. Wheel has the g3 laced to Reynolds carbon. Spins smooth with no play but sounds like there is no lube on the bearings. Had the bike for over a year and today was the first time. One other thing...noise only happens when coasting. Also didn't notice it until pushing bike into garage.

Check skewers. They can creak also. Often overlooked source of creaks.
I pulled off the freehub, greased everything, put it back together, and it's now as silent as a sleeping baby!
