Just picked up a set of American Classic Terrain 650b wheels from forumite Pelican last week, and mounted them up (tubeless) with a brand new pair of WTB Byway tires. For those who saw my earlier posts regarding fitting wider tires on the Gestalt, I did successfully mount 38mm Gravel Kings on the 700mm stock wheels, but they were pushing the limit of clearance at the seat tube. The 650b’s have plenty of clearance. I could probably go to a 2” or 2.1” tire now.

Anyway, Pelican asked me to post some pics once the wheels were on the bike, so here they are. I really like the brown sidewalls with the red frame. I have a little issue with the rear disc rubbing, and the rear wheel needs to be trued up a bit, so I haven’t been out on them yet (plus it’s been like monsoon season in WI lately). I hope to get out on the road/trail this weekend to try them out!

good job putting this together!

Wait till this weekend??

I dunno how you do that. I can't even wait until the sun rises the next day after building a bike up the night before.

If you find yourself needing a saddle with a bit more padding, try out the WTB Pure V.

Nice job! I love 650b on my Drifter and as far as the rotor rub goes, have you tried to move the caliper over a touch? I had a little rub on one of my disc bikes and I just needed to adjust the caliper a few mm and all was right in the world again.

Yeah, the caliper is pushed over as far as it will go and I still get rubbing. Going to try the business card trick next, and if that doesn't work I may have to try shimming the rotor a bit.

By the way, mounting the Byways was my first tubeless install, and it couldn't have been easier. The Byways stretched onto the rims pretty easily, and the beads popped into place with an air compressor without any issues. They say all night and don't appear to have lost any air, so I think I'm set!

Hi Tlarwa,

Awesome post! I have the same bike.

I was curious how the 650b conversion is going. Specifically, did you need to make changes to your crank length to avoid pedal strikes? Also, what do you do think the likelihood of actually fitting a 2.0 or 2.1 650b tire is on the bike? What clearance do you have around the chain-stay do you have now as a result of the conversation?

Thank you very much!

The 650b conversion is a piece of cake. No issues at all because of the wheel size. I'm running 47mm tires, which is 1.85". I think there may be anoter 1/8" all around to go to a 2.1" tire, but it'd be close. I think a 2.0" wouldn't be an issue though. I'll snap a couple close ups of the clearance at the chainstays and the seatstays. Those are the tightest areas. There's a lot of room at the fork and the seat tube now.

That would be awesome! Thanks!

I am trying to see if can fit the Schwabe Thurnder Burt on this guy.
