For my gravel bike, which I don't yet have in hand, I have some Shimano XTR Race wheels I'll run with a somewhat knobby tire (I have Elwood Terrenes mounted now, and some Schwalbe G-Ones to try out, ~40mm) for fireroads and single track (light and tough), and some I9 Torches laced to HED Belgium+ to run a large road or smoother gravel tire on (say under 35mm). Also have some wide I9 torches laced to ENVE M60s that I may try on committed singletrack days that should fit a 48mm on my frame, we'll see if I like them.

On my Soma Double Cross Disc, I'm running DT TK's 36h, Shimano Dyno front hub and XT rear (Centerlock), and 700 x 35 Schwalbe Marathon Supremes. This is more of a loaded touring setup and I just did a bike camping trip to Mt. Rainier that included some gravel riding.

On my Gunnar Crosshairs with Waterford fork, I'm running H+Son Archetypes 24/28h, King hubs, 700 x 32 Schwalbe Marathon Supremes. This is an unloaded gravel/all-arounder setup.

"Gravel" for me is mostly crushed and relatively smooth. My gravel rides usually involve a lot of pavement as well. Sometimes I will pump up my tires leaving home, deflate them when I get off pavement for long stretches, and then put air back in the tire for the ride home on pavement.

I have few different setups and they are all great for riding gravel and mixed surfaces.

Enve 650b am wheels to dt 240s with gravel kings mounted tubeless are great!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180905/23615be9117f4d58ea315d1cd0de255c.jpg

Stans Valor Pro set up tubeless with Compass Steilicoom tires are awesome for climbing, loose and muddy terrain.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180905/efd1e995da41ec55e8ea49cbe3f935b6.jpg

Reynolds ATR 700c setup tubeless with Schwalbe G-one allroad tires are great all around wheels and tires for mixed terrain.

Saving my favorite for last are the Reynolds ATR 650b wheels set up tubeless with 48mm gravel kings. These are my favorite wheels for 99% of my mixed terrain rides. I did have a little slippage during D2R2 going up steep long ascents during the downpour, but other than that these wheels and tires are smooth and comfy on and off road!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180905/b221e52d0f875a4f4f942f9a2671b304.jpg

Enve and Enve made I9 on I9 hubs for 650B and 700 with WTB Byways and Maxxis Rambler 38s, respectively.

You can get good deals now on gravel width older MTB rims/wheels as people upgrade to wider rims on their MTB, which is how I got two sets of nice wheels.

To me, the selection of proper tires play a bigger part in the overall equation.

Gravel Kings SK 40mm seems to be able to fulfill 99% of what I need.

The remaining 1% is when all hell breaks loose, survival mode-type riding and at that point, it matters not what tires I am wearing.

When it comes to wheels, I go cheap (read: heavy) but reliable, meaning I pick up a bunch of low-to-mid level shimano disc hubs from the co-op and build them up with alloy rims (Velocity A23, Archetype H Plus Son, and HED Belgium). I only built 32 holes 3X. Cost per wheelset averages $100 or less. In terms of durability, zero issue. I don't care about tubeless.

For off-road, I came here to say this among the folks riding $1000 wheels.

I took my stock from Specialized "Alexrims" wheels (bonus because that's my name) drop bar mountain biking on the wrong tires (38mm Marathons) because I had a free hour in town. Bottom out on the rim? Who cares?

Mixed Surface:
Road Bike, Stan's Alpha 340 rims, C Xray spokes (lots)
Bitex Hubs
Huchinson Sector 28 tubeless
This is a Road bike after all.....I'm not going down some banzai decent. It's an aluminum Felt FA, I don't let surface stop my rides on this bike.

"Gravel" Bike(s), Chinese Carbon 29er or Stan's Crest rims
Bitex Disc Hubs, They're not expensive and work well.
Usually Schwalbe G-One or Comet Hardpack
If I am on one of these bikes, I'm planning on riding a rough surface with some pavement added in.
It really is all about the tires, I have other big tires, some smoother and some small MTB tires depending on the expected conditions.

Stopped racing, pointed at my cross bike, and said I hereby imagine that sometimes you’re a gravel bike. So, lately, it’s Eurus tubulars with challenge cross tires — I think it’s one grifo and one fango. I might get some file treads — and have been thinking about some clincher wheel alternatives, but I’m in no rush on that.

The stock wheelset on my Parlee Chebacco is a DT Swiss C1800 wheelset. That's 370 hubs to what I believe are DT R500 rims, 22mm internal width, 24 bladed spokes, 1760g claimed wheelset weight. They're fine wheels. Not sure about the build quality yet (i.e. haven't had them long enough for problems to surface). The $538 MSRP seems competitive enough assuming they're built well.

They have Panaracer GravelKing SKs set up tubeless. I tried these for CX a couple times, but I wasn't happy. They don't seem to have enough traction in corners. Keep in mind I'm very new to tubeless and I didn't want to take the pressure down too low, so I could have experimented there a bit. They do fine for gravel, obviously.

Been very happy with my Reynolds ATR’s with GravelKings file thread set-up tubeless. Mine are the first generation so have had them for awhile, still perfectly true and Lord knows I’ve beaten the snot out of them.

Recently picked-up a set of Hunt 30 carbon gravel wheels. Came in right at advertised weight, true and spokes evenly tensioned. Freehub is louder than what I prefer but so far seem a lot of wheel for the money. After more time on them I’ll report back.

With all that said, hard to go wrong with what Oldpatatoe can build up to custom desire. In hindsight wish i had gone that route, hopefully in the future.

could the steel spokes add to the characteristics of the wheel?

havent had to tweak the wheel since i got them. ive definitely beat and neglected the wheels too. but they keep on trucking.

As I said, I haven't had enough time on them to surface any build issues. If they're built well, then I like them. If I were paying MSRP, I think they would be a decent buy. I believe one can find them on eBay for cheaper, as people look to offload their stock wheels.

If you're very particular about rim width, you'll want to note that the C series (cross road, by which I think they mean cyclocross) has 22mm internal width. I think these are optimal with tires from maybe 30 to 40mm. The ETRTO says that officially, tires between 35mm and 64mm are compatible. If you're using C-series wheels with 28mm tires, I wonder if the rim will be a bit too wide for the tire.

If I'm right, then maybe it would be better to consider their E-series wheels or the rims on those wheels (e.g. the R470 rim), which I believe use 20mm internal width rims. Those should accommodate road tires and many gravel tires. The Belgium rim is about 19 or 20mm internal width, I think.

Alternatively, it might not matter that much. And I don't know that there are good empirically-based rules or even guidelines about what width rims go with which tires.

My gravel/commuter bike is v-brake. I use:

DT240 front (24h) and rear (28h).
Easton R90SL rims
DT Aerolite spokes

(I'm 73kg and only really use it for commuting and very light gravel... so the relatively light build is robust enough).

At the moment I'm using tubes with some Giant-branded cross-city tyres I got for free as part of a bargain Gumtree find. They're actually pretty good. Will probably go tubeless with Gravelkings once these wear out.

I think Next (forum sponsor) RULE are amazing if you don’t mind keeping pressure relatively low. They are light, tough, and have a super shallow rounded bead that really cuts down pinch flats on rough terrain. I’m sure the XPLOR are even better for all-road use—a little deeper and wider, and can handle aomewhat higher tire pressure. I’ve also been very happy with a set of Stans Avions. They have a notable aero benefit over shallow rims, but for their depth they ride very smoothly over rougher terrain. Tire-wise, I’ve been happy racing Maxxis Ramblers on rough or sloppy terrain. I’ve been riding Hutchinson Sectors when it’s smooth enough for a road tire. My recent favorites are Hutchinson Overrides; they roll quickly on pavement but have enough width and tread for most gravel surfaces, as long as an aggressive tread isn’t essential.

I've been hammering a pair of Light-Bicycles 650b road rims to DT350 centerlock hubs for the last year and they are great.
