View Full Version : How to update a Mid-90s MTB?

So I decided I want to start working on my 96ish steel Ibis Mojo frame and make it into a bike...

What I need to decide/know if I want to (what is possible?) update it at all? I guess what I'm mainly contemplating is having 1x gearing and possibly a Fox Talas-type fork with discs for the front... I don't want to spend the money to get disc tabs/repaint in order to get a disc on the back... since I'm starting from just a frame, I figure doing these mods wouldn't really change the price too much from a complete period-correct build. I guess I'm going for a RestoMod in car terms...

The main thing I don't know since I'm not a geometry guru is what the effect of putting a Fox Talus RLC type of fork (adj up to 130mm) would have on this bike as I assume it was designed around a 80-100mm fork... I figure it will slow down the steering a bit as it should effectively slacken the steering angle?

For reference, I assume from some searching my Mojo has the following geo:
HTA- 71.5
STA- 72.5

Would love to hear the collective's thoughts.

Sell it and use the funds to buy a 44.

So much new and improved technology I dont think it is worth updating it.

This. Even something more affordable such as a Santa Cruz Chameleon or Kona Honzo would be immeasurably more capable and fun to ride. Find a hardtail with slack HT, short chainstays, a long suspension fork, 1x, and hydro brakes.

I'd build it and ride it as intended. It's never going to be a modern rig...

For sure. The OP mentioned the resto-mod vibe. What I really like about my 44 is that it still has that old school vibe but is totally modern.

Having just moved here and not having an MTB currently, not really sure... I've been told there is a little bit of everything. I'm certainly not looking for anything crazy though.

if I'm spending the kind of money a 44 looks like it sells for, I'm going for a full suspension... was looking to build up the Mojo on the cheap using used parts FWIW.

Would make a fun city ripper with fat slick tires and upright bars! I wouldn't build it up for trail riding though.

so I have an ibis silk ti that i’ve ridden a lot in single speed format.
it’s super fun. I did end up tracking down more modern fork with disk tabs and will be switching it over. for me it’s worth it because I love the bike not because I couldn’t get a much more capable used pivot/new ibis/specialized for what i’m
about to put into it. I will say that it was hard to track down a nice used 1 1/8 straight fork in TA disk format. id just built it up with cheaper parts and ride it.

Then I would not attempt to modernize it. Build it out with old cheap parts and enjoy the hell out of it.

I've got a thing for 90s era mtbs and am the original owner of a '96 Mojo. I had some good times on that thing BITD, but mtb tech has come a long way since then. I also have a rigid 29er and FS 29er and those two are my go-tos depending upon the trail. They're faster, roll better, and beat me up a lot less. The vintage sleds get pulled out usually only for special occasions - like organized vintage mtb rides. So, I still have fun on them, but in the context of other vintage nuts.

That being said, I have met people where all they ride are 80s/90s era mtn bikes and they don't seem to have any problem. One is a shop mechanic who could ride the latest and greatest but his collection doesn't include anything with suspension or disc.

I think most travel for '96 era bikes was still 63mm. I ran an 80mm Rock Shox Duke and wouldn't want to go more than that. I still have a small stash of mtn bike parts that I keep meaning to post in the Classifieds. If you'd like, PM if there's something specific you're looking for.

If you haven't already, put on a wider handlebar and shorter stem. I wouldn't put a longer travel fork on it and thus change the geometry. Tubeless tires and wheels too. How's the drivetrain and brakes?

I'd build the Ibis as a no-nonsense 1990's XC race bike. And then I'd get a new MTB. Making a riding comparison between the two would be good fun. I don't think you'd be disappointed in having a classic around either for those days when you want to sharpen your handling skills. :beer:

What's the clearance like? What about turning it into a rigid 650b trail ripper?
You could probably use Tektro cr720 cantis to make the brakes reach.

I have two old school hardtails, Ibis Mojo and Rocky Mountain Altitude T.O. Both these bikes are now only used a city bikes with slicks. I would not invest much into them as trail bikes. Not much fun compared to modern mtbs.

I had a late 90's Mojo, don't remember the year but it was made in Sebastopol. It rode great as 26. I tried 650b and 26/29 but it didn't ride as well at all. You should be able to dig up a Fox 80mm or similar for cheap but i wouldn't do any more than that. I remember it being fun as SS with a Soulcraft Convert. It would also be fun now with those fat Compass 26'ers on the street.

I wish I hadn't sold mine as my teenage daughter wanted it. But as others have stated, a current 650b or 29er is a much better mtb, both faster and safer on the trail.

I have a steel mojo and it´s as fun and pretty as the day i built it. You would sell it for peanuts... If you have space, keep it around. Ride it. On fast singletrack it´s a load of fun.

My mid 90's dekerf is now my primary mtb. for the 3-4 times a year I ride it and the type of trails i like to ride it is perfect. Only "upgrade" I have made is to fatter tires - 2.25s front and rear vs 2.1 front and 1.95 rear. I still on a set of wheels built in around 1994 with a mavic mtb front hub from 1990 or so.

I am going through a time of more road vs mtb riding, when it flops to the other side of the pendulum, I'll likely be back on a dualie. Just can't fathom going from a 23 lb bike that rides nicely to a 30lb "trail" bike.

Put a nice mid-90's Marzocchi Z2 fork on there. You will be VERY pleased. Do not put a longer suspension, however, the geo will be wrong for trails.

I did the upgrade and restomod thing while my kids got all the new stuff for years. When I finally built a modern 29er for myself I was ticked that I hadn’t done it many years earlier. Pretty sure I’ll feel the same way when I add a full sus to the stable...

i went thru this with an old stumpy. if you're actually trail riding, it's mostly not worth the hassle. the biggest hurdle was finding an appropriate fork and then a decent set of 26" qr wheels. i stuck with rigid fork and v brakes. throw some tires on there and turn it into a cafe runner with whatever hodgepodge of parts you have. 3x 2x 1x, doesn't matter. the great thing about this era of stuff was that it was greatly mix and match ready, so use whatever you can that you already have. when you start buying stuff the numbers don't justify the project.
