Cross season starts this week in Portland..

Who's racin'? And what're ya ridin'?

I'll finally be putting my Kirk into it's intended habitat. I have much to learn about setup and expect plenty of tinkering to follow.

I may go SS on the Kirk. I've got a Paul's tensioner and CK spacer/cog setup - just need to pick a ratio and get a front ring...

Nice rigs, everyone. That Kirk is pure motivation.

Nothing special on my front. Just a SuperX, cable disc and 160mm rotors to see me through this year. Already signed up for a few races with the first being next weekend.

First year at cross racing; let’s see how I fare. ;)

No racing here, but cx bikes are some of my favorite bikes to ride. Here are a couple of mine.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180903/737b806e83a7b4eb34f8d0c635a8beff.jpg

If I were going to race a bike it’d probably be this one!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180903/98cc438692b8114453042e8a1140a9ed.jpg

i realize i sound like an old man just saying this, but racing cx has less than zero appeal to me.

sounds like an awesome way to break my wrist, dent my bike or both. at my stage in life - i dont think i could justify an injury that would make my [non bike] life much more difficult just to play with other middle aged boys in the mud.

i certainly dont judge anyone else though, it's just not my bag; and it is fun to watch!

I see this completely the other way - the relative slow speed of cross and soft surfaces makes me see it as much safer than racing on the road. I am hoping to do my first cross race in over 20 years next month.

I should have a pic of my cross bike up here in about a week once I get the final parts delivered this week.

While you *can* hurt yourself racing CX, it's a harder thing to do vs riding/racing on the road.

After the 1st lap, everyone spreads out.

My 'new for 2018' frames are being painted (I hope!) as we speak. Going disc this year. Doubt it'll make me faster, but ya never know!

Raleigh SSCX
I haven’t raced SSCX in quite a few years but am hoping to this year. I’m also planning on using the it as my pit bike for my geared races.

Trek Boone
I just picked this up used and got it built it up. It’s light and the geometry really works for me.

Seven Mudhoney
I don’t have any decent wheels for it so I don’t know if it will see any races this year or not. Maybe I’ll look for a decent rim brake tubular wheelset for it.

Bah - the slower speeds, mud , grass etc makes for softer crashes. I didn’t do my first cross race until I was 50 and my last at age 61. It’s a hoot .

The season here always starts dry, and sometimes stays that way. The dust can be more of an issue unless you can get the holeshot and stay ahead until the pack spreads out.

Racing here starts Wednesday, I'll be riding this again:

While I won't be signing up for any 'cross races in the foreseeable future -- to paraphrase my favorite line about gambling (which i get to use annually whenever office mates want me to sign up for March Madness brackets), "racing is for people with hope" -- I have been riding the hell out of this lately, and expect to do way more as the weather turns.

And the Moots will be the ‘B’ bike. Which mostly sees usage with a tubeless setup and a power meter, for practicing and such during the week, then it goes into the pit at the races. It’s 1X this year though.

I finally got this thing mostly together. I will get a narrow-wide chainring and a Paul chain keeper on there by the end of this week.

Once I get fit enough to race cross (hopefully in a couple of months) I will get the tubulars on there, but for now the Eurus clincher wheels will have to do.

Swapping from 2x to 1x dropped 300g from the bike weight - and that doesn't include the savings from the THM crankarms either.

Not sure if I need to shorten the chain or not as this will be the first time I have ridden with a 1x so if anyone has some input please let me know.

This thing is fabulous. I used to convert to 1x for a couple years (with chain keeper and bashguard but otherwise "normal" setup), but have found the Rival 1 cranks/ring and derailleur very nice. As far as fitness, racing into shape can be fun...

No photos, but I attended the first of several local cross races called 'Cross on the Rock' (On Vancouver Island, BC). No riding, just spectating with my largely uninterested 7yr old :)

Sam Whittingham of Naked Cycles lives a few hours away and aside from being a pretty damned fast CXer, he had a strong contingent of gorgeous steel and ti frames rolling on that course.

If you are curious about his work, I can attest that they look beautiful in person, have great paint and get ridden pretty hard :).

A true 42 would fit, Limit is the drive side chainstay. If you resdished your wheel and could make the brakes work off center a 45 might fit. This bike has tons of clearance, in my case the mini vees are the actual limiting factor.

It’s a great bike, no fender mounts is my only complaint.

Awesome. That is exactly what I was looking for.

I picked up a dated Tricross a while back and have fallen in love with fat tires. The Tricross could fit 42's just fine and when I asked around about the Crockett they said "its more of a race CX than what you have and can only fit 38's".....whatever that means :p

Thanks for input!

sorry again to OP.....I'm out

Does your frame not have the hidden fender mounts?

Those were only on the disc version apparently.
