Curious about portable stands, how little can i spend and have something stable and dependable?? I have a really nice custom-made welded stand in my basement shop it is very heavy (it stays in the shop).

So the primary use for the new stand is the scrub-down outside.

What brands have forumites had good and bad experiences? What stands are you using for bike cleanings???

Between my bikes and my wife's bikes I'm washing 4 to 6 at a time (road, gravel, commuter x2). I'll likely be more diligent with cleanings with a nice stand...now i just lean them up against the patio furniture.

My wife's bikes are carbon...I assume that needs to be a consideration/cautions for clamps??

These work pretty well, plus they fold up out of the way. They’re stable, I have a buddy who uses them in his truck as a transport rack system.

Presumably, you want elevated. Wheels on or wheels off?

Feedback sprint, not only is a great work stand but also great for washing and collapses to a pretty portable package. Perfect cuz you can rotate the bike easily 360

yeah, elevated and option for wheels off. the model linked looks like a good option.

Ive got a venzo race stand off amazon. Wheels off, height adjustable and allows for easy portable working.

I have the Elite Race Stand. Like the Feedback, and Park fork mount stands, it is very easy, convenient and safe to use on carbon bikes. Several of the world tour teams use it as their workstand. With the constant sales at Bike Nashbar, you can get it for 15% off the $150 list price and free shipping.

The old Blackburn Workhorse if you can find one on eBay or CL. Best stand I've found to use for washing.

Just a thought here but you could bolt a fork mount onto a folding sawhorse and get pretty much the same thing.
I like the simplicity and easy cleanup of the sawhorse style stand. I wouldn't clean a bike on my good shop stand.

personally I have one of these Tacx "BikeStand" deals (https://tacx.com/product/bikestand/) I leave out by the garden hose, tucked behind the bushes. it was cheap enough that I just leave it outside year-round. good enough for a quick wash, fits any bike, you can spin the rear wheel if you need to, etc.

but if you want something more in-depth, and you're washing multiple bikes at a time... yeah, you want the Feedback Sprint.

I have an Aldi (yes, that Aldi) workstand which I've yet to unpack. We bought it as a stand for use at our vacation place in Michigan. There was a thread on Bike Forums this past Spring about it:

The overall tenor of the reviews seems positive.

I've got an old scissor-type that allows the bike to rest on the BB & has a stabilzing support for the down-tube. It's old & simple & will probably never die, but it's heavy, and of course only works with more traditional tubed frames. I tend to pull this one out when I need to apply some force when working on a BB removal. It looks similar to this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JTTTBN4/ref=dp_cerb_2

If I were replacing it with something for washing, or for taking on the road with me, I'd look for something like my *other* old stand that won't seem to die - an old Minoura. It has a typical clamp for the seatpost, folds compactly, and is light. Something similar to the Aldi one listed just above.

Or if you don't have an Aldi near you, here are two on Amazon that are just under $40 shipped w/ Amazon Prime. Both are very similar, just slight differences in how the clamp mechanism tightens/adjusts:

https://www.amazon.com/RAD-Cycle-Products-Bicycle-Adjustable/dp/B074PB8L1R

I think any of these three would be a good, affordable choice for what you're seeking. Any of them can be used with the wheels on, or off.

As others have also stated, I don't use my good stand for washing.

i've been thinking about something like this too to keep outside the garage.

i think what i'm going to do is make a wood sawhorse out of outdoor lumber and bolt a fork mount carrier to it and just leave it outside for cleaning duty.

Feedback Sprint..so you won't be 'tempted' to clamp the top tube..'pal'...:)

After 20+ years of hanging my bikes by a rope from 2 eye hooks screwed into the first floor joists in the unfinished basement, we've moved to a house with a finished basement and no place to work on or clean bikes in the basement. So I bought a Feedback Sprint a few weeks ago. Put my Dogma in cause it needs a wash after getting caught out in the rain. I still need to wash the bike but it looks good sitting in the stand in the garage. The stand looks like a nice unit and I thought the front fork/bottom bracket support would be better than a traditional clamp for me since I do more cleaning than building and maintaining bikes, plus I don't have any bikes I would clamp by the seat tube. It also comes with various adaptors for front and rear wheel spacing and axle sizes, although I only have road bikes.

I personally like the ease of use of the seatpost clamp style, but have never owned the Sprint-style stand. I’ve got both the Feedback Sports Pro Elite and the Aldi stand mentioned a few posts back. The Feedback stand is awesome - very easy to use and well made. The Aldi stand is not nearly as well made, but it was $30. For $30, it’s a home run. It lives in the garage and is used for primarily for bike washing duty. Can’t fault it whatsoever.

almost went this route as i have several misc fork clamps from old roof racks. Storage was the only draw back. But I stumbled on to a Park PRS-21 on ebay for $160. I figure it will outlast me. yeah, and with this model I don't have to worry about crushing a carbon tube...

Good choice. Wheels off is the best way to clean thoroughly. And to be able to spin the bike 360 as you wash? Great feature.
