Does anyone know of a way to use a bike set up for Mavic’s Speed Release thru axle system on a trainer? I know Kurt Kinetic makes thru axles for trainer use, but anyone who owns a Mavic axle knows they are...complicated! Kurt’s site certainly doesn’t show one compatible. (I’ve sent them an email.)

I’d be surprised if something didn’t exist to allow the use of a bike set up for this system on a trainer, since Mavic specifically designed and markets this toward road (and by extension, cyclocross) racers. And your average crit and cx racers warm up on trainers routinely, as do many for other road race disciplines.

Has nobody with Speed Release tried to use a trainer yet?

You can use a thru-axel on the Tacx trainers; check their website for your specific question.

If anyone else has this question, the answer is: it doesn't matter that your frame is Speed Release specific. Even though Mavic's axles have 10 mm notches in them, regular straight 12 mm thru-axles for trainers will work. The thread pitch is 1.0 mm. These are your choices:

Have you tried the Robert Axle Project axles in youe Mavic Speed release frame? Curious if they work.

Yes, I did get the Robert Axle Project. I can't figure it out for the life of me, but they don't work! My thread pitch gauge measures 1.0 mm thread pitch on the Speed Release axle, and of course it measures it as 1.0 on the RAP axle labeled 1.0...but the two don't mate?! They are of course also both 12 mm diameter. I can't figure it out. It looked like the thread depths were the same, but couldn't really measure that. Do thread pitches also have different angles or something? I have no idea...

All I know is, a RAP 1.0 mm axle doesn't work, and I can assume a Kurt Kinetic Traxle 1.0 mm will also not work. Not sure if there's a solution. I'd recommend if you are seeking a road or cx bike that you like to warm up on the trainer on, either don't get it if it has Mavic Speed Release, or see if the bike manufacturer can supply a derailleur hanger with a different standard.

I also bought a pair and they do not work. I'd really like to find a solution to this problem!
